San Diego State was selected by conference media as the Mountain West's preseason favorite on Wednesday. It's the fourth consecutive year the Aztecs have been picked as the favorites. They received 23 of a possible 27 first-place votes and 293 points for the top spot in the poll.
The Aztecs also dominated the conference's individual preseason honors. Junior guard Trey Kell was named to the preseason All-Mountain West team. Sophomore forward Montaque Gill-Ceasar, a former ESPN 100 recruit and Missouri transfer, was named preseason newcomer of the year. Jalen McDaniels shared freshman-of-the-year honors with Utah State guard Koby McEwen.
Coach Steve Fisher's team will attempt to build off a 28-10 season in which it missed the NCAA tournament last season. San Diego State's first two games of the 2016-17 season will be televised by the ESPN group of networks. The Aztecs open on Nov. 11 against crosstown rival San Diego (11 p.m. ET on ESPNU) and then they'll play at Gonzaga on Nov. 14 (11:59 p.m. ET on ESPN2).
