Celtics forward Al Horford, who is familiar with Matt McCall from their Florida days, on McCall getting hired at UMass: "He's a great guy. Just very energetic. Somebody that I feel like he's going to be successful wherever he goes, that's just the feeling I got, even when he got the Chattanooga job a couple years ago. Obviously, UMass is a big job for him. I think he'll be really successful there."

UMass expected to interview Boston Celtics and former Butler/Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry again next week, source told ESPN.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

This could be very interesting for UMass and Pat Kelsey. Read this statement from AD Ryan Bamford: "The Memorandum of Understanding has a buy-out clause. It doesn't speak to specific jobs. It just speaks to his responsibility to buy the contract out once he has executed that agreement. For the first two years of the execution, it is $1 million. We have to work through that piece."

UMass announces Pat Kelsey asked out of his agreement at 3:30 p.m. Kelsey said in a statement that he asked out due to personal reasons. He said this decision was personal, nothing to do with UMass. He apologized in the statement. Kelsey was on campus Wednesday. Kelsey's photo is still the background on the UMass basketball twitter page. UMass released him, but the statement from AD Ryan Bamford said the school is still figuring out how this "impacts the executed Memorandum of Understanding." UMass will renew its search for a coach.

Kelsey backs out at UMass two days after hire

Pat Kelsey has decided not to take the UMass job, citing "personal reasons" for his decision. He instead will return as coach of Winthrop.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

Great hire by UMass in Pat Kelsey. Said many times, Kelsey gets it. He is all class and isn't afraid to speak out on common sense issues.
