Way-Too-Early Top 25: Minnesota

The Golden Gophers fell in the first round but bring everyone back from an NCAA tourney team. They should be a factor in the Big Ten.

No. 12 Middle Tennessee State beats No. 5 Minnesota 81-72. The ViewFromVegas is it was NOT an upset as the Blue Raiders closed as 1.5-point favorites (and also covered the spread). The game went over the betting total of 138 points.

If a No. 12 seed beats a No. 5 but the Vegas line had the lower seed as the favorite, it that really an upset? Middle Tennessee took down Minnesota thanks to 19 points from Reggie Upshaw, many of them in the paint. Reggie Lynch was in foul trouble, but the Blue Raiders scored even when Richard Pitino's rim defender was on the floor.

Middle Tennessee pulls off the first "seeding" upset of this NCAA tournament, although it's not much of an upset at all. No. 12 seed Middle Tennessee defeated No. 5 seed Minnesota 81-72 in a game the Blue Raiders were actually favored to win by 1.5 points. MTSU beat Michigan State last year in a 15-2 matchup, and the Blue Raiders got even better this year. Next up comes a second round game against Butler for the right to go to the Sweet 16. This Middle Tennessee team is the real deal.

Reggie Lynch is sitting out with three fouls for Minnesota, but it may not have made any difference if he were in the game. Middle Tennessee is carving up the Golden Gopher defense up into tiny pieces. The only recent Minnesota stop was a missed Blue Raider basket in transition.

ESPN Stats and Information

Minnesota entered the game allowing opponents to shoot 39.8 percent from the field, the best field goal percentage defense in the Big Ten and 16th in the nation. Middle Tennessee shot 15-of-30 (50 percent) in the first half.

Middle Tennessee misses at the buzzer, but the Blue Raiders put together a heck of a half to lead Minnesota 37-31 at the break. This MTSU team beat Michigan State in last year's NCAA tournament in a 15-2 matchup, so the Blue Raiders aren't intimidated. Even as a 12 seed this year, the Blue Raiders were listed as a 1.5-point favorite by Vegas oddsmakers.

Middle Tennessee's half-court trapping defense has given Minnesota problems in the first half. The Blue Raiders were a popular pick as a potential 12-5 NCAA tournament upset, and they've lived up to the billing thus far. The Gophers have been settling for 3-point shots, which have yet to consistently fall. It's still early, but this has all the makings of a memorable game.

Thursday viewers' guide: Middle Tennessee-Minnesota

No. 12 seed Middle Tennessee is more than just a trendy upset pick over No. 5 Minnesota. The Blue Raiders have won 20 of their last 21 games and have the tournament experience that the Gophers lack.

ESPN Stats and Information

Can Middle Tennessee deliver another stunner? ESPN's BPI gives the Blue Raiders nearly a 50 percent chance of upsetting No. 5 seed Minnesota in Thursday's 4 p.m. first-round matchup in Milwaukee -- the highest chances of any No. 12 seed in the opening round.

Jesse Temple ESPN Staff Writer

Minnesota center Reggie Lynch talks about what it's like playing as a 5 seed when so many pundits are picking 12-seed Middle Tennessee to win on Thursday. He also explains how the Gophers went from an eight-win team last season to 24-9 this season.

No one's laughing at the Gophers anymore

A year ago at this time, the idea of Minnesota in the Big Dance was laughable. But Richard Pitino has engineered quite the turnaround from an eight-win 2015-16 campaign.
