URI beats Creighton, 1st tourney win since '98

Jeff Dowtin scored a career-high 23 points, upstart Rhode Island answered every threat and the Rams stunned sixth-seed Creighton 84-72 on Friday in the NCAA tournament's Midwest Region.

No. 11 Rhode Island beats No. 6 Creighton 84-72, but the ViewFromVegas is it wasn't an upset as the Rams were bet to 2-point favoritism. The game went over the betting total of 144 points as overs continue to dominate at 16-7-1 (69.6 percent) so far in the NCAA tournament. Favorites/underdogs are tied 12-12 ATS.

When Rhode Island's players woke up on Sunday morning, they still didn't know if they'd be playing in the NCAA tournament. Now, after an Atlantic 10 tournament title and an 84-72 win over Creighton, the Rams are in the round of 32. Give a share of the credit to a URI offense that gave the ball away just eight times in 73 possessions.

Rhode Island, which was favored against Creighton despite being an 11 seed, led from the opening tip and never was seriously threatened in the second half en route to an impressive 84-72 victory. Forget that potential Dana Altman-Creighton reunion in the second round. The Rams are playing with a lot of confidence right now, and their defense should make for an interesting matchup against high-scoring Oregon on Sunday.

Creighton's Justin Patton fouls out with 3:49 left, and that might be the end of the freshman's college career. If so, it was an ignoble end for the potential first-rounder, who went 3-for-12 from the field for just eight points.

The fact that Creighton's in this game against Rhode Island despite Marcus Foster and Justin Patton shooting a combined 7-of-26 from the floor is a credit to the Blue Jay defense and to some opportunistic baskets from Khyri Thomas.

As poorly as Creighton has shot the ball today, the Bluejays continue to hang around in striking distance of Rhode Island. And the Rams are just 3-for-20 from the three-point line, including 0-for-6 in the second half. Expect Creighton to continue to pack its defense in and force Rhode Island to make a jump shot down the stretch.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

E.C. Matthews has had a tough day. He's just 2-for-8 from the field and airballed a three moments ago. Even without much from its star guard, Rhode Island leads Creighton by 11 points and is playing with a lot more energy than the Bluejays.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

No. 11 seed Rhode Island was a trendy pick to upset No. 6 seed Creighton, and the Rams showed why in taking a 33-26 lead into halftime. Creighton shot just 30 percent in that half as URI turned the game into the defensive half court struggle it desires.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

Creighton is quickly finding out how little fun it is to face Rhode Island's defense. The Bluejays have made just three of their first 15 shots, two of them on offensive rebounds. They're getting very little in their half court sets against the Rams so far and had better be ready for a slog.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

The second game in Sacramento should be a fascinating clash of styles. Rhode Island plays smothering defense, while Rams coach Dan Hurley described Creighton on Thursday as "like the Golden State Warriors with how they push the ball and shoot threes." Which, um, OK. But it still should be a good one.

Beware the 11 seed in Sacramento

Rhode Island played its way into the NCAA tournament with an Atlantic 10 tournament title, and now as an 11 seed will be a major problem against Big East's Creighton in Sacramento.

Four-star center Jacob Epperson has committed to Creighton, per his coach. Australia native.
