How strength coaches are taking over college basketball

In season and now in the offseason, a coach's most important staff member might not be sitting on the bench or in the film room. It might be the person in charge in the weight room. Welcome to the age of the college basketball strength coach.

Way-Too-Early Top 25: Cincinnati

The Bearcats have a huge hole to fill in the backcourt but have an imposing front line returning in Gary Clark and Kyle Washington.

Is there a team that's been more consistent in our mind's eye this season than UCLA? Ever since the Bruins won at Kentucky in December, Steve Alford's team has been fixed in our minds as an extraordinarily dangerous offense. Tonight UCLA scored 79 points in 63 possessions against a Cincinnati D that rates as one of the best such units in D-I. In an otherwise chaotic season it's been easy to be right about the Bruins.

Ball lifts UCLA to victory over Cincinnati

Lonzo Ball scored 19 points and ignited UCLA's rally from a poor start with nine assists, lifting the third-seeded Bruins to a 79-67 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday in the South Regional.

Time to get excited for UCLA-Kentucky, Round 2. The Bruins rode a huge second half to a 79-67 win over Cincinnati, even playing solid defense after trailing by three at halftime. Their rematch with the Wildcats, whom they beat in Rupp Arena in December, is the glamor matchup of the Sweet 16.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

This second half has been UCLA at its devastating best. The Bruins are shooting 64 percent overall, are 7-for-13 on threes and have 13 assists on 18 made field goals. Lonzo Ball has turned in a masterpiece: 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Brian Bennett ESPN Staff Writer

Bryce Alford was 3-for-11 from the floor in his first three halves of this NCAA Tournament. He's hit three three-pointers in the second half against Cincinnati so far. UCLA hits another level when he's on.
