Semi Ojeleye to enter 2017 NBA draft

Ojeleye was strong in his first season since transferring from Duke, but most scouts still don't see him as a top-tier pick.

SMU coach Tim Jankovich, on not calling a timeout before his team missed a potential game-winning shot in the loss to USC: "You never know what you're going to get. They could double. They can switch their zone. They can go to man. They can double your ball screens. … But when you let flow happen and … your team knows what you're calling. … I think it's 10-to-1 you have a better chance."

No. 11 USC's 66-65 upset of No. 6 SMU was the biggest upset of this year's tournament so far by a wide margin. The Trojans were 7.5-point underdogs and +280 on the money line while the three previous underdog winners were Xavier (+2), Northwestern (+2) and Arkansas (+1) with none higher than NU's +120 on the money line.

USC buries late 3-pointer to send off SMU

Elijah Stewart hit a late 3-pointer for No. 11 seed Southern California as the Trojans upset sixth-seeded SMU 66-65 Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

USC was chosen to beat SMU in only 18.2 percent of Tournament Challenge brackets.

USC pulls off another stunning comeback, rallying from an eight-point halftime deficit to knock off No. 6 seed SMU. Shake Milton's game-winning try at the buzzer bounced off the rim, giving the Trojans the 66-65 victory.

USC beats SMU 66-65. The ViewFromVegas is the Trojans did it as 7.5-point underdogs and +280 on the money line.

Semi Ojeleye with an incredible defensive play to force a turnover. He has been unbelievable at both ends for SMU.

Eamonn Brennan ESPN Staff Writer

SMU shot 41 percent from 3. USC was a mediocre defensive team that was even more mediocre on the 766 possessions when it zoned, per Synergy scouting data. If this morning USC had said it was willingly going to zone the Mustangs we would have laughed and laughed ... and we would have been wrong.

On the heels of a 15-point comeback in the play-in game, USC has now roared back in Tulsa. USC's 2-3 zone has completely discombobulated SMU, which hasn't been able to find any driving lanes in the second half.

Eamonn Brennan ESPN Staff Writer

Been a long time since SMU's offense struggled to create good looks like this. Even against Cincinnati's vaunted defense last Sunday, when the Mustangs scored 71 points in 60 trips. USC was no one's idea of an elite defense this season, but the Trojans' active zone really flummoxed Semi Olejeye and company in the last five minutes.

Semi Ojeleye just picked up his third foul. He's been SMU's entire offense this second half, with a game-high 19 points. Tim Jankovich will have a decision to make if Ojeleye picks up a fourth.

USC is staging yet another second half comeback, but the Trojans can't find an answer for Semi Ojeleye. The SMU standout just buried a follow-up dunk, then barreled his way into the lane for a conventional 3-point play. SMU leads, 43-40.

Hometown hero and Tulsa-area native Shake Milton nails a huge 3 -- and gets a huge ovation -- from the top of the key to give SMU a little breathing room before halftime. The Mustangs lead USC 38-30 at the half.

The impressive SMU fan showing at the BOK Center at Tulsa is enjoying this first half so far. The Mustangs are cooking from the field, shooting 71 percent. As a result, SMU leads 30-18.

SMU, looking for its first NCAA tournament win since 1988, has one of the most interesting starting fives of the tournament. The Mustangs start five players all ranging from 6-6 to 6-8, allowing them to switch relentlessly. So far, so good for SMU, as the Mustangs lead USC 10-6.

After defeating Providence in the play-in game late Wednesday night in Dayton, USC coach Andy Enfield didn't get much sleep as the Trojans flew to Tulsa to face SMU on Friday. "I got about three hours, but our players got more than that. We got together as a staff this morning. Our players slept in."

Jake Trotter ESPN Staff Writer

USC and SMU are in the rare situation of their first round matchup being a rematch from earlier in the season. The No. 11 seed Trojans, who advanced by winning their play-in game Wednesday, defeated the sixth-seeded Mustangs in November. Asked how that will impact Friday's meeting in Tulsa, SMU coach Tim Jankovich said, "I doubt something that happened in November is the biggest deal. ... We are a completely different team than we were then.  ... I don't think it'll have a bearing at all on the outcome."

ESPN Stats and Information

USC comes off a First Four win over Providence on Wednesday night, but SMU has won 16 straight and 26 of its last 27. It's no surprise that ESPN's BPI favors the Mustangs by a significant margin.

Joe Lunardi Senior Writer, ESPN.com

Back in the Stone Age (like 1999), we created Adjusted Scoring Margin as a supplement to RPI. It correctly pegged a number of unexpected NCAA runs over the years -- Florida (2000), Kent State (2002), George Mason (2006) and Butler (2010) -- so just for kicks I looked to see which teams in this year's bracket are significant under- or over-valued (by pre-tourney ASM rank). UNDERVALUED: Wichita State (2), West Virginia (4), Saint Mary's (8), SMU (9), Cincinnati (12), Middle Tennessee (28), Rhode Island (31), Nevada (37). OVERVALUED: Kansas (17), Arizona (19), Minnesota (36), Northwestern (49), Michigan State (57), Maryland (58), Xavier (61), Seton Hall (69). Just remember, don't shoot the messenger!
