Few: 'Our defense won the game for us' (1:53)

South Dakota State had a solid game plan for top-seeded Gonzaga, but for a 16-1 upset to happen, the 16-seed will need to be almost perfect. The Jackrabbits were not. And they were especially not perfect when it came to two-foot shots, where SDSU was 5-of-18.

ESPN Stats and Information

South Dakota State's Mike Daum scored 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting, his fewest points in his last 10 games. Daum entered the game averaging 25.3 points per game, second-most in the nation. The Jackrabbits' record fell to 3-7 this season when Daum scored fewer than 20 points.

Gonzaga wins its first round game, 66-46, after a slow start against 16-seed South Dakota State. Zags shot 31 percent in the first half (14 percent from 3-pt range) and improved that to 47 percent in the second (and 37 percent from range). Moving forward through the West, Gonzaga isn't going to be able to have slow starts and still think it can put together a 20-point win.

South Dakota State has been doubling down on Przemek Karnowski when he puts the ball on the floor. This has been fairly effective. He has been held to 10 points, but more importantly he seems to be getting a bit frustrated by that presence and buzzing hands around him and the ball.

To cut into the Zags' lead -- and really, for most upsets to be possible -- SDSU needs to get hot from behind the arc. Jackrabbits average 36.3% from range on the season and their game-best this year is 58 percent (vs. Denver). Will need that kind of performance to break away at Gonzaga'a lead.

The Zags turned this into a double-digit lead thanks to some shots falling. Shot 31% in the first half, 47% in the second half thus far.

South Dakota State is refusing to lay down, but the Jackrabbits could really help themselves by making the bunnies. They've missed at least three two-foot shots this half.

Top-seeded Gonzaga heads into the half with only a four-point lead over 16-seed SDSU. A 16 seed has never beat a one-seed in tourney history, but a tough first half from the Zags isn't enough to write them off yet. Last year, top-seeded UNC only led 16-seed FGCU by one at the half... then the Tarheels won by 16. In 2014, top-seeded Virginia trailed 16-seed Coastal Carolina by five at the half. UVA won 11.

Things that everyone -- Zag and Jackrabbit fans together -- got behind in Salt Lake City today? Booing the two Duke fans (in Blue Devil garb) that appeared on the Jumbotron.

On the list of things you don't want to see while taking a 3, I'd imagine "7-foot-1 Przemek Karnowski flying out at you" is near the top of the list... SDSU's Reed Tellinghuisen (who *is* 6-foot-7) just saw that. The result: blocked shot.

South Dakota State hopes to become the first 16-seed to knock off a one-seed. South Dakota State junior Lane Severn kept yelling "All heart!" as the team took the court in Salt Lake City.

ESPN Stats and Information

ESPN's BPI overwhelmingly favors Gonzaga in Thursday's 2 p.m. first-round matchup in Salt Lake City. Gonzaga ranks first in the nation in adjusted net efficiency, while the Jackrabbits come in with the Summit League's second worst defensive efficiency (110.5 points per 100 possessions).

ESPN Stats and Information

South Dakota State's Mike Daum averages 25.3 points per game, second-most in the nation behind Central Michigan's Marcus Keene (30.0). Daum averages 2.8 more points per game than any other player in this year's NCAA tournament.
