BIGGEST LOSER (28Dec): St. Johns's and Temple both fell below the cut line with inexplicable home losses. In Temple's case, the opponent (Tulane) was a head-scratcher; for St. John's, the margin of defeat against Providence was unexpected. None of that will matter if Shamorie Ponds' knee injury is serious.

Chris Mullin on Shamorie Ponds' injury, per school release: "I don't know. I never saw what happened, but I saw him limping. I asked him and he said that he was really hurting after a layup. Otherwise, I don't know exactly. I noticed him limping at the start of the second half."

Providence tops St. John's in Big East opener

Kyron Cartwright and Alpha Diallo both posted double-doubles and Providence caught fire in the second half to cruise to a 94-72 victory over St. John's on Thursday night in the Big East Conference opener for both teams.

ESPN 100 power forward J'Raan Brooks committed to St. John's tonight, source told ESPN. Former USC commit recently took an official visit.

St. John's beats Saint Joseph's in the battle for SJU. Love the way the Johnnies defend. They're now 10-2 heading into Big East play. First three league games will be telling: home vs. Providence, at Seton Hall, at Creighton.

St. John's tops Iona 69-59 in Holiday Festival

Shamorie Ponds scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures and lift St. John's to a 69-59 win over Iona in the second game of the Holiday Festival on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

Arizona State weathered a second-half comeback attempt from St John's and held on to win 82-70 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Sun Devils are the lone undefeated team in the Pac-12 (8-0) and will head to Kansas for an interesting test on Sunday at Phog Allen Fieldhouse.
