Next season's stars: Jock Landale

If Jock Landale returns to Saint Mary's for his senior year, he'll be part of a loaded group of upperclassmen in college hoops next season.

Way-Too-Early Top 25: St. Mary's

St. Mary's was one of the most efficient teams in the nation last season and return rising senior Jock Landale, enough to keep the Gales in the Top 25.

Jock Landale has a decision to make

Saint Mary's junior center Jock Landale improved his NBA draft stock with impressive performances against VCU and Arizona in the NCAA tournament.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett said in a text that he is staying with the Gaels. He had been mentioned as a possible candidate at Cal. Bennett is expected to receive an extension sometime this spring. Bennett led the Gaels to the round of 32 before losing to Arizona in Salt Lake City. Bennett has led the Gaels to six NCAA appearances since 2001, 3 WCC titles (1 outright).

Zona's Alkins plans to play despite finger injury

Arizona starting guard Rawle Alkins returned to the court after suffering a minor fracture in his right index finger during the Wildcats' win over St. Mary's on Saturday night.

Arizona escapes Saint Mary's to reach Sweet 16

Lauri Markkanen and Allonzo Trier combined for 30 points and No. 2-seeded Arizona rallied to defeat No. 7 Saint Mary's 69-60 and advance to the West Regional's Sweet Sixteen on Saturday night.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

The second half belonged to Arizona. Allonzo Trier scored all 14 of his points after the intermission, and in those 20 minutes Saint Mary's shot just 3-of-13 on its 3s. When Sean Miller's Wildcats have entered the NCAA tournament with 30 or more wins, they've reached the Elite Eight every time. This group was 30-4 on Selection Sunday. Everything's on-track so far for Arizona.

Led by Jock Landale, St. Mary's heads off the floor. Despite the loss, Landale was the most impressive player on the court. He finished with 19 points, 11 boards, four assists and a block.

Arizona is headed to the Sweet 16 after a 69-60 win over St. Mary's. Wildcats outscored the Gaels 40-30 in the second half and held St. Marys and it's explosive shooting to just 24 percent from range.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

Not as much urgency from St. Marys at the end as you might expect. Gaels need to score quick and they're only jogging up the court.

People are starting to leave Vivint Arena. There's still about a minute left. Apparently they don't know it's March.

That's Calvin Hermanson's second 3-pointer of the night but it couldn't come at a better time -- cuts Arizonas lead to five and gives the Gaels some momentum after running 20 seconds off the clock.

One of St. Marys goals today was to slow Arizona's transition game by not turning the ball over. The Gaels have turned the ball over 13 times but Wildcats only have four fast break points (they have scored 15 points off turnovers, however).

Lauri Markkanen is not the player you want to send to the free throw line at the end of the game. He has shot 83 percent from the line this season. He's 9-of-10 tonight.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

St. Mary's is really struggling from range. The Gaels are shooting 25 percent from behind the arc (season average: 40 percent).

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

St. Mary's is not happy with that foul call on Jock Landale. They were thinking Dusan Ristic dropped his shoulder a bit. But, after holding a towel to his face for a bit, it appears as though Landale is no longer bleeding.

Hello again, Arizona offense. The Wildcats were 10-of-29 from the field and 1-of-7 from deep in a sluggish first half against Saint Mary's. They were 5-of-8 to start the second. Lauri Markannen is still struggling to get his arms around this game, but Kadeem Allen is picking up the slack, and the early burst is a crucial sign for a team that has its hands more than full with Jock Landale and Co. on the other end.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

Arizona had been wary of Jock Landale's court vision. He's proving them right -- so smart with the ball in his hands, doesn't get bothered by the pressure or double teams.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

Arizona reached the round of 32 with five straight wins and an offense that was firing on all cylinders, none of which is proving to be much use early against Saint Mary's. Jock Landale started the game a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor for the Gaels, while the Wildcats went over seven minutes without a field goal. SMC leads by one at the half in Salt Lake.

Joe Lunardi Senior Writer, ESPN.com

Did anyone ever explain why Saint Mary's is in the same region as Gonzaga? Supposedly a bracketing principal to separate first three teams from the same conference.

Arizona will have hands full with SMU

The Wildcats haven't lost a game in three weeks, with 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen starting to find his groove again. But Saint Mary's has a highly effective cast of players, which will make this game intriguing.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

Last year when Arizona and St. Mary's scrimmaged in the preseason the Gaels hit 17 3-pointers. Arizona guard Allonzo Trier said the Wildcats need to guard ball screens well, especially late in the shot clock.

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

St. Mary's coach Randy Bennett said he has been very impressed by Arizona's 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen's offensive game. "I hope we're guarding him and not watching him tomorrow, though."
