Bubble Watch: St. Mary's nearing a lock, Akron out

Saint Mary's should be a lock to make the tourney. Middle Tennessee, Illinois State, UT Arlington and Wichita State have some work left to do. Meanwhile, farewell to Akron, a long shot without a single top-100 win that fell at home to Kent State on Friday.

Gonzaga stays perfect with win over Saint Mary's (1:04)

Gonzaga's two "worst" (the term is relative) performances on offense in WCC play have come in road games at BYU and, now, Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs won both games by 10 points. Mark Few's team has an excellent chance to reach the NCAA tournament 33-0.

No. 1 Gonzaga beats No. 20 Saint Mary's 74-64

Przemek Karnowski scored 19 points and No. 1 Gonzaga survived its toughest remaining obstacle to an undefeated regular season by beating No. 20 Saint Mary's 74-64 on Saturday night.

Saint Mary's fans showed up today. One of the best environments I've ever witnessed live. They're still standing while down double digits. Kudos. This is why I love college basketball.

Gaels need a run now to win this. But Zags just keep attacking. They're so gifted. Forget all the nonsense about their ranking and schedule. Teams will not want this problem in March.

Gonzaga responding to these Saint Mary's runs. Deflating. Hard to overcome a squad with this depth, even at home.

I don't know how it looks on TV, but this is an extremely physical game. Jock Landale caught Karnowski with an elbow early in the second half. Karnowski was furious that refs missed it. But then he got away with contact on Landale's next drive. The officiating in the paint will be significant down the stretch.

If you hear sonnets to Gonzaga's depth and aren't quite sure why, here are two instructive examples: 1) Zach Collins, a potential first-round pick, is probably the most talented player on the floor in Moraga tonight, and he averages 17 minutes per game off the bench. 2) Gonzaga's points, assists and steals leader, Nigel Williams-Goss, spent the last 10 minutes of the first half half on the bench with foul trouble, in a rabid road gym, against a legit Saint Mary's team … and the Bulldogs lead by nine at halftime anyway.

John Gasaway ESPN Insider

Gonzaga and Saint Mary's combined to make just three 3-pointers, meaning this game's being won and lost in the paint. The Bulldogs and Przemek Karnowski have the advantage there. The Gaels are fortunate to be down just nine to an opponent shooting 76 percent on its 2s.
