Houston coach Kelvin Sampson on his team's win over Wichita State, which moves the Cougars to 15-4: "What this does is tells the average fan, who doesn't pay much attention to us, that we're good...[this will] perk their ears up and that's a good thing."

Wichita State preseason All-American guard Landry Shamet with just 7 points on 2-for-10 shooting, his worst shooting outing of the year, in a loss at Houston on Saturday. The root of the struggles today? "Their defense," Shockers coach Gregg Marshall said. "They did a good job on him today."

No. 7 Wichita St. drops 2nd straight game

No. 7 Wichita State has now lost two in a row after a 73-59 defeat to Houston on Saturday. It was the Cougars' first win over a top-10 team in 22 years.

Houston's 73-59 win over No. 7 Wichita State is quality résumé win for the Cougars, a bubble team. They're 9-0 at home this year and avenge an 81-63 road loss to the Shockers earlier this month. Houston guard Rob Gray was impressive, with a game-high 24 points.

No. 7 Wichita State falls at Houston 73-59, the Shockers' second straight. It's the first time they've lost consecutive conference games since the 2012-13 season. The loss snaps their nation's-best 11-game road winning streak.

Houston leading No. 7 Wichita State 62-46 at the under 8 timeout (7:18 left). Would be a good resume win for Houston if the Cougars can hold on. They're in Joe Lunardi's "Next four out" in Bracketology. This would be the Shockers second straight loss after falling at home to SMU on Thursday.

Don't worry, Shockers, it happens to everyone

No. 7 Wichita State became the latest team to fall victim to the upset bug, losing to SMU. But losing to unranked teams isn't a big deal this season.

Which early-season surprises are really contenders

There might not be one great team this season, but teams such as Oklahoma, Purdue and West Virginia have been pleasant surprises. Now we have to wait and see if they can really challenge for a national title.

Seth Walder ESPN Analytics

Purdue has almost caught Villanova in BPI's latest ratings and rankings. The model, which predicts team strength going forward, is not buying teams like Oklahoma, Arizona State and Kentucky the way the AP voters are.
