This could be very interesting for UMass and Pat Kelsey. Read this statement from AD Ryan Bamford: "The Memorandum of Understanding has a buy-out clause. It doesn't speak to specific jobs. It just speaks to his responsibility to buy the contract out once he has executed that agreement. For the first two years of the execution, it is $1 million. We have to work through that piece."

UMass announces Pat Kelsey asked out of his agreement at 3:30 p.m. Kelsey said in a statement that he asked out due to personal reasons. He said this decision was personal, nothing to do with UMass. He apologized in the statement. Kelsey was on campus Wednesday. Kelsey's photo is still the background on the UMass basketball twitter page. UMass released him, but the statement from AD Ryan Bamford said the school is still figuring out how this "impacts the executed Memorandum of Understanding." UMass will renew its search for a coach.

Butler guard Kamar Baldwin talks about his approach to stopping Winthrop standout guard Keon Johnson, who scored 17 points but needed 19 shots. Baldwin's length caused the 5-foot-7 Johnson problems, and Butler's offense was exceptionally well balanced. Eight players scored at least five points.

Soon it will be time to start talking about Avery Woodson in the same awed zero-turnover terms we've been reserving for Monte Morris. The Butler senior scored 18 points to go with his usual zero giveaways in the Bulldogs' 76-64 win over Winthrop. For the season as a whole Woodson has committed just 10 turnovers.

No. 4 seed Butler led from start to finish in a 76-64 victory against No. 13 seed Winthrop in a first round NCAA tournament game. Butler advances to play the Minnesota/Middle Tennessee State winner on Saturday. The Bulldogs' length was simply too much for the Eagles, who missed out on a chance to spring the first upset of the big dance this year. Butler has such good scoring balance and can beat opponents inside and out. The Bulldogs have a great shot to reach the Sweet 16. Last time that happened? Back in 2011, when Butler reached its second consecutive national championship game.

Winthrop's contingent of fans has had plenty of reason to stand and cheer in this second half against Butler. Led by guard Keon Johnson, the Eagles quickly cut their deficit in half, from 14 to seven. The energy in the building has shifted, with other teams' fans jumping on the Winthrop bandwagon.

Butler kept Winthrop at a distance for most of the first half to take a 41-27 lead at the break. Winthrop's Xavier Cooks (pictured) scored on this drive to the basket as the halftime buzzer sounded. He paced Winthrop with 11 points. Butler's Avery Woodson drilled five 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 15 points.

Butler guard Avery Woodson opened the game on fire, burying three 3-pointers before the first media timeout against Winthrop. Woodson, a graduate transfer from Memphis, entered as the Bulldogs' best 3-point shooter (41.7 percent this season). Butler's Kamar Baldwin also has been a defensive pest on Winthrop's undersized superstar Keon Johnson.

Butler and Winthrop square off in the first of four NCAA tournament games from Milwaukee today. Winthrop guard Keon Johnson is one of the most electric players in the region. We'll see if the Eagles can spring the upset.

ESPN Stats and Information

ESPN's BPI significantly favors 4th-seeded Butler over 11th-seeded Winthrop. The Bulldogs have earned the highest seed in school history, and they reached the national championship game as a 5 seed in 2010.

Winthrop guard Keon Johnson is one of the most exciting players in the NCAA tournament. Johnson stands just 5-foot-7 and weighs 160 pounds. But he's averaging 22.5 points per game, which ranks 10th in the country. He'll be a key to Winthrop's upset hopes against Butler.

ESPN Stats and Information

South Dakota State's Mike Daum averages 25.3 points per game, second-most in the nation behind Central Michigan's Marcus Keene (30.0). Daum averages 2.8 more points per game than any other player in this year's NCAA tournament.

ESPN Stats and Information

An NCAA tournament regular throughout much of the 2000's under Gregg Marshall, Winthrop is back in the Big Dance for the first time since 2010, as the No. 13 seed in the South region. But despite making their 10th appearance in since 1999, the Eagles have just one tourney win in program history.

ESPN Stats and Information

The Tar Heels stay close to home in getting the top seed in the South. The top half of that region also features a Butler team coming off back-to-back losses.
