Interesting result in the Mountain West: Wyoming beats San Diego State by 13. Hayden Dalton had 36 and 15 for Wyoming. Wonder if any team in the MWC is consistent enough to push Nevada all season.

66 days until college football kickoff: Wyoming scored 66 points in a loss at UNLV on November 12. That's just shy of the FBS record for most points in a loss held by Nevada, who scored 67 points in a four-overtime loss to Boise State in 2007.

Bubble Watch: Nevada lone representative for the MWC?

Nevada is the favorite to win the MWC, and is in good position for an at-large bid if it doesn't get an automatic berth. After that, it's hard to see anyone else in the conference sneaking into the NCAA tournament.

Power outage delays Troy-Wyoming game

Troy's Jeremy Hollimon was shooting the lights out on a 7-0 run and the Trojans had tied Wyoming at 13 when the lights went out in the Arena-Auditorium, prompting a game delay.

Will anyone challenge the Aztecs?

Last season, the formerly high-level Mountain West was a one-bid league. San Diego State, 16-2 in league play, missed the NCAA tournament after it was upset in the conference tourney. Who could step up this season? Conference races (Insider)

Mountain West released its preseason poll: No shock that San Diego State is clear-cut No. 1 pick with 23 of the 27 first-place votes. Here is the rest of the poll: 2) Nevada 3) New Mexico 4) Fresno State 5) Boise State 6) Utah State 7) Colorado State 8) UNLV 9) Air Force 10) Wyoming 11) San Jose State. I think San Diego State wins the league -- and second is fairly wide open.

Ranking all 78 NCAA tournament champions

Villanova captured its second national title when Kris Jenkins hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat North Carolina. Where do the 2016 Wildcats rank on the list of other NCAA tournament champs?

Jump shot innovator Sailors dies at 95

Kenny Sailors, who is credited by some with being the first to use the modern jump shot, has died. Sailors was named the most outstanding player of the 1943 NCAA tournament when his Wyoming team won the title. Story

Disappointments? UNLV has to be near the top of the list. The Runnin' Rebels have dropped 3 straight to open league play: at home to Fresno, at Colorado State and now at Wyoming. UNLV was up 17 at one point today.

Cal AD Mike Williams told me that he didn't like the idea of Cal playing AT Wyoming. Bears headed to overtime in Laramie. Would be another tough loss for a Cal team that started out as a top-25 squad and projected Pac-12 contender.

Bears on upset alert?

Laramie, Wyoming, is cold, remote, and 7,139 feet above sea level. It is not a welcoming place. Its collegiate men's basketball team is used to playing in the lung-burning elevation; most of its home opponents are not. Cal will try to brave the elements and leave with a win this Saturday. Final: Northern Iowa 71, Wyoming 54

The Panthers got 41 points from bench players in the win. Deon Mitchell (pictured) was one of five UNI players with 10+ points. The last time UNI was in the Round of 32, it beat Kansas. Next up is the winner of Louisville-UC Irvine.

Northern Iowa's lead looks safe

Five different Panthers have scored in double figures today as UNI's lead is up to 14 with under 4 minutes left. Seth Tuttle, who has the second-best Player Efficiency Rating (PER) in the nation, has 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 assists.

Unlikely source of points for UNI

Northern Iowa's Paul Jesperson has 13 points off the bench today to lead the team. He had 4 points combined in the Panthers' 3-game run in the Missouri Valley Tournament.
