College hoops Power Rankings: Will SEC's depth hurt teams in March?

Eleven SEC teams are within striking distance of the tournament, so what's the problem? They're building their résumés and metrics by beating each other, so the committee might value the league differently when selecting the field.

After Saturday's win over Xavier, Villanova's Jay Wright said Phil Booth (11.6 PPG, 43 percent from the 3-point line) could play limited minutes against DePaul on Wednesday.

Big East showdown: No. 3 Villanova 95, No. 4 Xavier 79

Mikal Bridges led an early 3-point shooting spurt that put Villanova in control, and the third-ranked Wildcats showed they're not ready to relinquish their reign in the Big East, beating No. 4 Xavier 95-79 on Saturday in a showdown for the league lead.

Trevon Bluiett has 63 points on 25 shots in his last two games. That's absurd.

Down the stretch, Jay Wright will have to manage Mikal Bridges and Eric Paschall, both with four fouls. This is where Trevon Bluiett is at his best. He'll just keep attacking and drawing fouls and nibbling at this lead if Nova can't stay in front of him.

Double technical fouls on Omari Spellman and Paul Scruggs after their brief confrontation. Surprised this didn't happen earlier in the game. Lot of trash talk. Huge fourth foul for Scruggs, too.

Mikal Bridges was the biggest problem for Xavier in the first half. JP Macura couldn't stay with him. Naji Marshall, a lengthy, 6-7 combo forward is on him to start the second half. That's slowing Nova's offense.

Important to note that Villanova only connected on 15 of its 53 attempts (28.3 percent) from beyond the arc in the last three games. Made 58 percent (11-for-19) in the first half at Xavier.

Since Xavier came into the Big East in 2013, Villanova is 9-1 against the Musketeers with wins coming by an average of 17.6 points.

Xavier is actually playing good perimeter defense. Active on the 3-point line. But the Wildcats continue to make contested 3-pointers. Just hot right now. They've made 63 percent of their 3-pointers. But again, Xavier isn't missing assignments. They're rotating off screens and making sure they don't surrender open looks. Nova just making ridiculous shots.

Xavier's Goodin throws sweet behind-the-back pass (0:21)

A couple of key matchups to watch. Eric Paschall has shadowed Trevon Bluiett in the first half. Doing a good job of denying his touches. Bluiett working hard to get open. The other matchup to watch is JP Macura on Mikal Bridges. Once Bridges goes downhill, Macura can't keep up without help, so he's giving him extra room so he can react when Bridges drives. Those matchups could dictate the outcome of this game.

Xavier's Macura hot from deep early (0:27)

Phil Booth's injury is significant for this Villanova squad, especially on the defensive end. The Wildcats have held opponents to just 0.95 points per possession (29.8 percent from the 3-point line), while creating turnovers on more than one-fifth of their possessions, per hooplens.com. Much harder to run players off the 3-point line and guard the perimeter without the guard.
