'Dunk City' goes dunkless vs. UNC

Florida Gulf Coast's moniker did not ring true as they were out-dunked by North Carolina 4-0. The top-seed Tar Heels scored a 83-67 win.

UNC runs past FGCU in second half

The top-seed Tar Heels led the 16-seed Eagles by just 1 at halftime but then outscored them 42-24 in the second half for the easy 83-67 victory. Brice Johnson had 18 points and 8 blocks for North Carolina. Box score

Tar Heels blowing past Eagles in 2nd half

Whatever Roy Williams said at halftime must've been good. North Carolina, which held a one point lead over Florida Gulf Coast at the break, is on a commanding 22-6 run in the second half. Follow live

Carolina up 11 on Florida Gulf Coast after 8-0 run, but crowd inside PNC Arena still has he anxiousness of trying to rally a home team that's behind. Lots of people standing and cheering during the game action. It's not like this for most games in the Dean Smith Center for Carolina.

Wilson basketball in PNC Arena: Marcus Paige has made 18 of 33 career 3-pointers. That includes 3 of 6 against Florida Gulf Coast. Paige has long maintained there was something about the feel and weight of a Wilson ball that favors his shooting. NC State uses Wilson for their home games.

No. 1 seed North Carolina finds itself in a one-point game with FGCU at halftime, raising the question of just how unthinkable a win by the Eagles would be. Well, very! Extremely! Apocalyptically! No. 16 seeds are 0-124 against top seeds in the modern era. You are fighting history, FGCU. And you are receiving a vigorous and pointed halftime speech, Tar Heels.

North Carolina's defense doesn't come close to resembling the group that held Virginia to 57 points in the ACC tournament championship game. Florida Gulf Coast shot 60% in the first half, that's the best percentage Carolina has allowed for a half all season. Maryland had the previous high shooting 56% in the first half of the Heels' 89-81 on Dec. 1.

UNC holds onto slim lead over FGCU at half

Florida Gulf Goast is shooting 60% from the field and is outscoring UNC 22-16 in the paint, but the Eagles trail the Tar Heels 41-40 at the break. Brice Johnson has a game-high 11 points. Halftime stats

FGCU withstood early run by Carolina and has settled down. Heels not shooting well (13-30) but most importantly for the Eagles, they're not allowing many second chances. FGCU out rebounding Carolina 18-11.

UNC's Brice Johnson already with two blocks, just said to no one in particular "no sir, not in my house" after stuffing Marc-Eddy Norelia

Carolina still does a poor job defensively on the back end opening up for players running through picks. They've actually run into each other and picked themselves a couple of times already.

First Round: FGCU (16) vs. N. Carolina (1)

North Carolina is averaging 41.1 paint points per game, the most by a major conference team in the past five seasons. But the Eagles boast an aggressive defense that is more than willing to crash the boards -- can they challenge UNC in the paint? Preview

Florida Gulf Coast will try to overcome a whole lot of history against North Carolina. Not only has a 16 seed never beaten a 1 seed, but the Tar Heels own a 31-1 record in NCAA tournament games played in the state of North Carolina. The Heels' only loss was to Penn in 1979. The silver lining for FGCU? That lone loss happened in Raleigh too.

Paige on the win streak vs. No. 16 seeds

“You certainly don't want to be the one that ends that streak,” said Marcus Paige. “We haven't really thought about it that much. ... Obviously, 1 seeds are supposed to beat 16 seeds.” But based on FGCU's game on Tuesday, the Eagles may be better than most No. 16 seeds. Daily Tar Heel

Biggest tournament upsets: No. 5

In 2013, No. 2 Georgetown was favored by 14 over No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast, which was making its first tournament appearance in just its second year of eligibility. After leading by two at halftime, "Dunk City" came alive in the second half, scoring 54 points en route to a 10-point win. Biggest upsets

Not the first dance for No. 16 seeds

Florida Gulf Coast and Hampton have enjoyed success in the NCAA tournament since the 2000's. You have to go back a bit further since Austin Peay and Holy Cross have made noise.
