Pitino says reporter mistaken for sideline spy

According to coach Rick Pitino, an "inexperienced" Louisville player confused a CBS sideline reporter for someone he thought was relaying playcalls to Jacksonville State.

Ray Harper said Jacksonville State was picked to finish last in its league and "we're here ... and we had a chance." Remarkable story for that program and Harper.

Louisville has smooth opener in tourney return

Mangok Mathiang scored 18 points and Deng Adel added 16 Friday to help second-seeded Louisville pull away from Jacksonville State 78-63 in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

Rick Pitino on facing Michigan: "We're playing the Golden State Warriors on Sunday."

The Louisville players talked to Norbertas Giga (30 points, 5-for-5 from the 3-point line, 9 rebounds) after the game. Donovan Mitchell tapped him on the chest. Mangok Mathiang hugged him. Cardinals advance to face Michigan. But Giga leaves this game knowing he just had a career game against a title contender.

As expected, Louisville opened up this game. But Norbertas Giga is the best big man on the floor. And he's facing a Louisville team with some of the best interior defenders in the country. Impressive effort by the Lithuanian.

If you'd told Ray Harper before the game his team would be down just seven points at halftime to a 2-seed with legit national title hopes, I think he'd be good with that. Jacksonville State was tough early. Couldn't stop Louisville once the Cards got rolling. But also not out of this one after shooting 59 percent.

If Jacksonville State center Norbertas Giga is 7 feet tall, then how tall is Anas Mahmoud? He's listed at 7 feet but clearly a few inches taller than Giga when they stand next to each other.

Between Jacksonville State (3) and Louisville (4), there are seven players here who were born outside the United States. The international landscapes are not only reshaping the NBA. They're changing college basketball, too.

I can't tell you what Rick Pitino is saying in this timeout. But his players have the same look you had as a kid when your mom said, "Your teacher called."

Myron Medcalf ESPN Staff Writer

Rick Pitino has shouted, "What the .... are you doing?!" a few times already.

First fun fact of the afternoon for those who don't know. Jacksonville State is in Jacksonville, Alabama, about 75 miles east of Birmingham. Not a Florida school.
