Kirby Smart wins his home debut at Georgia, but a 26-24 win against Nicholls wasn't what he had envisioned. "We didn't play a Georgia brand of football," Smart said after the game. "We wanted to create an identity. We didn't create am identity." The Bulldogs open SEC play next week on the road at Missouri.

Nicholls won't go away. After a muffed punt, the Colonels take over and score to cut Georgia's lead to 26-24 with 3:42 left. The last time the Bulldogs lost to an FCS team was in 1940 to Columbia.

Still waking up? Jacksonville State coach John Grass told me this week that he was voting for the 11 a.m. SEC Network game for his team's game against LSU. Maybe he was on to something. Heading to the fourth quarter, Georgia has gotten all it can handle from fellow FCS foe Nicholls today. And Clemson continues to struggle against Troy, leading 13-10 at halftime.

It took seeing Nicholls take the lead, but Georgia has responded in a big way. A long TD from Isaiah McKenzie followed by a defensive score and the Bulldogs are back in front, 26-14, late in the third quarter. Fans inside Sanford Stadium can finally exhale.

Georgia's star freshman Jacob Eason has played the entire first half at quarterback, but the Bulldogs are clinging to a 10-7 lead over a Nicholls team that lost 73-7 to Arkansas two seasons ago. Eason is 9 of 14 for 123 yards.

It's not a vacation: Teams get to go abroad once every four years, so they better get something out of it. What did each traveling squad learn this summer? We go through the list.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey and Georgia coach Mark Fox both agreed with ESPN's Seth Greenberg on the CBB podcast that the NCAA should create a 10-day dead period in August. They said the coaches and recruits need to breathe a bit after a crazy July/year. http://es.pn/2axiQgq
