Hawaii takes control in Round 1

The Rainbow Wariors receive a serious 'A' for effort in their 77-66 win over Cal in the first round-- as seen in this photo. Hawaii's Roderick Bobbitt finds a target to save his ball from going out of bounds. Best tourney photos

Hawaii needs to do a better job of getting to the free throw line. Rainbow Warriors get there for just the second time tonight. And yes, there's 7:12 left in this game.

Maryland goes on a 9-0 run over the last minute, capped by the Terrapins' first made 3-pointer of the game. Hawaii, meanwhile has made one of its last 11 FGs.

Eamonn Brennan ESPN Staff Writer

The story of Maryland's season -- disappointing but decent offense backed by extremely solid first-shot defense -- is on display tonight, and in extremes. Nearly 30 minutes gone and the Terrapins are 0-15 from 3. You have to guard well to stay in a game with that.

What a bonehead foul from Hawaii center Stefan Jankovic. With six team fouls he fouls Melo Trimble 50 feet from the basket and sends him to the line with five seconds remaining in the half. Trimble knocks both down to give the Terrapins a 28-27 lead at the half.

Maryland's starters average two inches taller and 15 pounds heavier (per player) than the Hawaii starters. Even so, Rainbow Warriors are outrebounding the Terrapins, 7-2.

I love that the Hawaii coaches haven't changed up their wardrobe just because they're in the tourney. Wearing tan linen shirts today with green stitching. No suits for the Rainbow Warrior staff.

Stats & Info

Second Round: Hawaii (13) vs. Maryland (5)

The Terps have never lost to a team seeded 13th or lower (11-0 all time). If they can push that to 12-0, they'll be in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003. The Rainbow Warriors would like to become the first Big West team to get to the Sweet 16 since 1992. Follow live

Most of the Hawaii fan contingent has brought banana leaves (for good luck) from the islands.

Should be an interesting match up here with Maryland-Hawaii. Rainbow Warriors are scrappy enough to makes this a game and Maryland's inability to play a consistent game could mean this is close late. If so, what wins out -- talent/size or drive?

Hawaii's Quincy Smith said that his celebration of upsetting Cal mostly just involved a lot of responding to texts.

Hawaii coach Eran Ganot on getting Hawaii its first NCAA Tournament win: "It's special. I said when I got hired that it was the honor of my life. ... Our job is to build a legacy. ... I know there are a lot of people going nuts in Hawaii ... We're really proud to honor them."

Chantel Jennings ESPN Staff Writer

Quincy Smith, Stefan Jankovic and Eran Ganot are all incredibly poised following their upset of Cal. Not acting surprised or overjoyed, just another game.
