Crean: 'Didn't fail' at IU, wants to coach again

While acknowledging minor changes he would have made as Hoosiers coach, Tom Crean says he has no regrets about how he handled things in nine seasons at Indiana that ended with his firing.

Andy Katz ESPN Senior Writer

Former Indiana coach Tom Crean met with his team today in Bloomington to say goodbye. He had texted with them after being fired over the weekend.

Trend is brewing now with major coaching hires: younger or coaches with less than five years of head coaching experience. Not saying it's right or wrong but it is the trend: LSU, Washington, NC State, Illinois. Outliers are Counzo Martin to Missouri and Brian Gregory to South Florida, so far. Will be interesting to see how Cal, Oklahoma State and UMass handle. Can't see Indiana going in this direction.

There has been no offer made from Indiana to UCLA's Steve Alford as of now, source close to situation told ESPN. May happen ... but nothing yet.

Billy Donovan's name has been tossed around lately for college openings. Just spoke to Donovan and he said he is "very, very happy in the NBA and in Oklahoma City -- and is committed there." Hasn't even finished his second season in NBA.

Will be interesting to see if Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg becomes an option for some of these college jobs. Bulls 10th in Eastern Conference right now, but huge buyout could be issue. Chicago's final regular-season game is in 27 days.

ESPN Stats and Information

Tom Crean's tenure at Indiana ends with a .551 winning percentage, second-worst among all Hoosiers head coaches (min. 100 games). Only Lou Watson (1966-71) won at a lesser rate than Crean in Bloomington.

Former Indiana coach Mike Davis, now at Texas Southern, on IU job: "It's an unbelievable job. I think it's a top five job in the country. Always on TV, always sold out, players in your state. It's unbelievable. You can go anywhere in the world and they know Indiana. … Whoever you bring in has to win. People get confused. You don't have to win the press conference; you have to win games. "You have to win, and you have to win every year. That's just the way the job is. You can't take it personal. You have to embrace it. When they pay us the money they pay us, they have the right to fire us. When you are not getting it done, there's no grace period."

Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider

Doubt he can get it, but told by numerous sources former IU standout and current LA Clippers assistant Mike Woodson has high level of interest in Indiana job.

Goodman on Indiana's firing of Tom Crean

ESPN Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman discusses the timing of Indiana's firing of Tom Crean, the Hoosiers' season, Crean's tenure with the team and contenders to replace him.

ESPN Stats and Information

Indiana is not shy about making coaching news around big events. In addition to firing Tom Crean just as the NCAA first round tipped off, the school announced a contract extension for football coach Kevin Wilson a few hours before the College Football Playoff championship game in January 2016. (Wilson was fired less than a year later.)

Tom Crean's firing as IU head basketball coach comes six days after ex-football coach Kevin Wilson acknowledged that he, too, had been let go by the Hoosiers, despite AD Fred Glass labeling Wilson's Dec. 1 departure a resignation due to philosophical differences. Wilson, now Ohio State's offensive coordinator, is reportedly receiving about a fifth of the more than $2m left on his multiyear contract.
