O'Neil: Conference races to watch

The ACC boasts a national title favorite in Duke but also contenders (UNC and Virginia), sleepers (Louisville and Syracuse) and a host of teams that will make things interesting (NC State, Miami and Notre Dame). Dana O'Neil, however, is intrigued by the unknown. Most interesting: ACC or Big Ten?

This year's ACC could be deepest yet

Duke is at the top. North Carolina, Virginia, Louisville and Syracuse will be close behind. The ACC is always king in college basketball, but this year's league could be deeper than ever.

Other key visits this weekend… • Five-star forward Jarred Vanderbilt (No. 23) heads to TCU for an unofficial visit. The Horned Frogs have moved into a good spot for Vanderbilt since hiring Corey Barker, Vanderbilt's cousin, as an assistant coach. Former New Mexico center Nikola Skecic will also be on campus. • Tennessee welcomes Isaiah Stokes (No. 60) and four-star forward Tyler Polley. • No. 51 Ethan Thompson heads to Oregon State for his official visit. The Beavers' conducted an in-home visit on Sunday, and they have the edge in his recruitment: Thompson's father is an assistant coach and his brother plays for the Beavers. • Xavier Tillman (No. 75) takes his official visit to Michigan State, two weeks after going there on an unofficial visit. Purdue, Florida and Marquette are also in the mix. • Justin Smith (No. 80) cut his list to four this week, and will visit Villanova this weekend. He took a trip to Indiana last weekend, was at Xavier earlier this month, and will visit Stanford later this month. • Anthony Gaines (Butler), Devontae Shuler (South Carolina), Evan Battey (Miami), Jamal Cain (Marquette), Abu Kigab (Illinois), Victor Uyaelunmo (USC), Darryl Morsell (Notre Dame) and C.J. Roberts (Missouri) are some other visits to keep an eye on.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey and Georgia coach Mark Fox both agreed with ESPN's Seth Greenberg on the CBB podcast that the NCAA should create a 10-day dead period in August. They said the coaches and recruits need to breathe a bit after a crazy July/year. http://es.pn/2axiQgq

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said on the CBB podcast he has talked to his good friend GW coach Mike Lonergan, who is under investigation for emotional and verbal abuse. "I grabbed him in Vegas and said how can I help you? He's a teacher and educator and intense guy too. He can't overreact. I said you can't get into a public contest of throwing barbs. But it's my alma mater and I'm disappointed in the administration that they could have handled this better. I'm close to the place and love the place. The guy has done a good job. He works his butt off and represents the place well. I just hope it works out and Mike continues to stay at GW. As an alum we're happy the way he's run the program." http://es.pn/2axiQgq

Notre Dame's Mike Brey said on the ESPNU CBB podcast that he and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski discussed when the ACC goes to 20 league games in 2019 that they should look to get the ACC-Big Ten Challenge as an exempt event so it doesn't count against non-conference scheduling. He said ACC schools will have to watch non-conference scheduling once it goes to 20 league games. http://es.pn/2axiQgq
