Since June 26, the day of Clayton Kershaw's back injury, the Dodgers have gone 49-30, the third best record in the majors behind the Cubs (52-30) and the Red Sox (51-30). The Dodgers erased an eight-game division deficit over that stretch and have clinched the NL West.

Jorge Soler had an MRI on his right side back in Chicago. It came back clean so he's day to day still. He missed a few days with the injury last week before playing over the weekend but was moving gingerly. He could rejoin the team in the coming days.

Mets officials have suggested that Steven Matz's mechanics were being closely monitored after the elbow issue was diagnosed, and he did not alter his motion and trigger a shoulder problem. Still, a link cannot be completely discounted.

David Ortiz: "My body is counting the days" until retirement. Was asked if he would consider playing for Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, but said he would need to be playing in order to be in shape for that tournament."

The Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka could still make his final start of the year this weekend against the Orioles. Tanaka missed his last start because of slight tightness in his forearm, closer to his wrist. The Yankees' team doctor, Chris Ahmad, cleared Tanaka to play catch on Tuesday, which he did successfully. On Wednesday, Tanaka will throw long toss. Even if the Yankees are eliminated, Tanaka would like to make his final start. He currently leads the American League with a 3.07 ERA.

Drew Pomeranz won't pitch Thursday, as scheduled, but "he's not shut down," according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. If/when he pitches again, it'll be out of bullpen. Pomeranz has exceeded career-high in innings, experienced soreness after five-inning start last weekend at Tampa Bay. Henry Owens will start in his place.
