The Cubs have a new closer in Wade Davis as they traded Jorge Soler to the Royals on Wednesday. The move means Hector Rondon will continue to set up along with Carl Edwards Jr. who emerged late last season. Soler is better suited in the AL where he can DH giving him a better chance to stay healthy while limiting his time on defense. Davis played for Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay.

Coors helps greatly alleviate concerns that Ian Desmond's 2016 fantasy numbers will regress, so while he was my No. 108 overall player and OF31 as a free agent, he's now my No. 60 overall and OF19 as a Rockie. Until the team makes other moves, though, I'd wonder: How high in the order does he hit? He might drop a few rankings spots if the Rockies are already done with their lineup.

Cubs win Series, and say Northwestern then makes the NCAA tournament. Biblical Chicago karma tells me Duke will lose title game to DePaul.

Ever complain that a certain player pads his stats in garbage time? For the MLB winter meetings, a team of computer scientists at Johns Hopkins University studied how major leaguers performed in "Meaningless Game Situations" in 2016. The MVP of MGS? Cubs slugger (and NL MVP) Kris Bryant, who hit .500 in 52 at-bats -- with six home runs and 21 RBIs -- in MGS with his team ahead. Intrigued? Methodology and more details can be found on the school's web site (http://bit.ly/2gbiAl1).

The Dodgers' priority is to bring back Justin Turner, but is there a point when they move on from their desired plan? Club president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman: "Sure. I think that as conversations get to the point where you will potentially lose something, you go to them. In the case where a player is Option A and Option B has gotten to the point where you need to make a decision, that's when you go and say, 'Look, we're at this point.' That's the part of the timing element that is tricky."

Ian Desmond is expected to play 1B for the Rockies, a position he hasn't played in the minors or majors. He moved from SS to OF last season.

The Rockies give up the highest unprotected pick in next year's draft -- No. 11 overall -- to sign Ian Desmond. 5 years, $70 million.

Cubs broadcaster Pat Hughes missed out on making the Hall of Fame as Bill King, formerly of the A's, was named the Ford C. Frick winner for broadcasting excellence.

The Mets have been talking to other teams about Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce, but with glut of free agent outfielders, very slow-moving.

Gary Cohen is not headed to the Hall of Fame ... this year anyway. The late Bill King, a former Athletics broadcaster, received the honor as the Ford C. Frick winner for broadcasting excellence.

Don Mattingly confirmed the Marlins have Interest in Koji Uehara & Junichi Tazawa. "They're at least part of our discussion about how we'd like to build a bullpen. Not just with some flexibility but different styles"

Don Mattingly on Kenley Jansen's interest in Miami: "He didn't tell me he absolutely wanted to say on the west coast or he absolutely didn't want to play in South Florida. So basically, he was open to the idea. . . . My call was to let him know that we talked about him, there was legitimate interest and we just wanted to make sure that he had interest."

If Jorge Soler indeed lands in Kansas City in the Wade Davis deal, the best case I can make for Soler in fantasy is the substantially larger role (which, obviously, does matter a good bit). But it's a significant park downgrade for power, so there's a good chance the result is he'll be overvalued. It'd be tough for me to take him over even, say, Yasmany Tomas, my OF56.
