Spin rates: How they're useful and the numbers that matter

The term spin rate, which measures the revolutions per minute on a particular pitch, is becoming part of the baseball vernacular, but it's important to know what numbers matter and which don't.

For Yankees, end of season can't come soon enough

After playing themselves into postseason contention earlier this month, the Yankees can't buy a win, with Sunday's walk-off loss the latest example.

The odds that this debate ends 8 minutes from now is roughly equivalent to the odds of Bartolo Colon hitting an inside the park home run.

The Astros tried to score Marwin Gonzalez with two outs in the sixth on a line drive to left field, but he was out by 10 feet even as Nori Aoki nearly bobbled the hit and made a slow throw home. Just a bad send as the ball was hit too hard. Mariners lead 2-1 in sort of a must-win game for both teams.

The fifth spot in the Cardinals rotation has fallen apart late in the season and that's a bit troublesome since, with no more off-days, they'll need another start in that spot on Saturday, perhaps with the wild-card on the line. Monday night was just a bit rough for Cardinal pitching. Jaime Garcia, Michael Wacha and Luke Weaver, the three primary candidates to pitch Saturday, combined to allow 17 hits, four of them home runs, and 14 runs total. The Cardinals could elect to make Saturday a bullpen game since they have so many extra arms with an expanded roster.

The Nationals are falling apart. With Stephen Strasburg (elbow), Daniel Murphy (buttocks), and Bryce Harper (thumb) already ailing, now they have to worry about Wilson Ramos. The All-Star catcher exited in the sixth inning when he landed awkwardly after trying to catch a high throw home. Before walking off the field very gingerly, he was on the ground for several minutes, grimacing in pain and clutching his right knee.

Add a stolen base for the Marlins' Dee Gordon, who also has a season-high four hits. That was Gordon's 27th stolen base of the season.

The Marlins' Dee Gordon is having a banner night. He's 4 for 4 with a solo HR. The four hits is a season high.

With six scoreless innings in the books after getting out of a bases loaded jam Kyle Hendricks is the only qualified pitcher with a sub 2.00 era as it dropped to 1.99. The Cubs lead the Pirates 11-0.

Now the Indians are saying Kluber left with right groin tightness. Let's hope it was just extra precautionary and nothing too serious as the Indians can't afford to lose another starter. Meanwhile, Roberto Perez just homered to give the Indians a 5-3 lead.

Javier Baez has a career high 6 RBIs as the Cubs have opened up an 11-0 lead on the Pirates. They're 12 outs away from win No. 100.

Interesting decision by Terry Francona to remove Corey Kluber after four innings with a 4-2 lead. Kluber had thrown 60 pitches, so apparently the Indians had a strict limit, preserving a few pitches down the stretch so Kluber is as ready as possible for Game 1 of the Division Series next week. Francona still has the AL's best bullpen to turn to as the Indians try to clinch the AL Central with a win.
