Fast facts on Tyler Thornburg, Red Sox's new setup man: He's 28, posted 2.15 ERA, 13 saves and 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings in 67 appearances for the Brewers. Dave Dombrowski said he wanted someone with closer ability. Thornburg took over as Brewers closer after Jeremy Jeffress was traded at deadline.

The best indication that Edwin Encarnacion isn't getting the offers he's looking for: Agent Paul Kinzer telling teams there's no hurry to get him signed. Indians, Rockies interested. But Red Sox appear "very unlikely."

The White Sox and Nationals are far down the road on a trade that will send Chris Sale to the Nationals in exchange for Lucas Giolito, Victor Robles and a low minor leaguer. Reynaldo Lopez and Koda Glover will not be in the proposed deal. The structure of the deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal.

The Dodgers are "aggressively" checking out alternatives at third base in case free agent Justin Turner goes elsewhere, an MLB source said. Turner is still the team's No. 1 option, but the Dodgers are being careful to protect themselves in case things fail to work out. Luis Valbuena is the second best 3B option on the free agent market this winter, while Todd Frazier and Yangervis Solarte are among the top trade options at the position.

Clayton Kershaw said his offseason workout program might change slightly but only as a nod to his advancing career, not because of this past season's back injury. "Everything has been good so far and I have been working out for a while," the 28-year-old Kershaw said. "So far so good."

Twins 2B Brian Dozier on trade rumors, like those connected to the Dodgers: "That is what fuels you to hopefully remain in an organization because you want to be a part of success there, but at the same time I understand it's a business. Obviously the Dodgers have come up and it's one of those things that is exciting. If you don't embrace the opportunity to let all of this soak in and see how teams value you, then you lose out. I think it's pretty cool."
