For South Florida Cubans, watching Jose Fernandez pitch felt like freedom

He was on his way to a $200 million contract, but the Marlins ace was about so much more than baseball. Jose Fernandez's exile story was our story. And his joy for playing the game was unmatched.

Mets farmhand Josh Zeid tossed three no-hit relief innings and Israel advanced to next March's World Baseball Classic with a 9-1 win against Great Britain on Sunday in Brooklyn. Former major leaguer Jason Marquis opened the game with four no-hit innings. Ike Davis went 0-for-3.

The Cubs set a franchise record with their 57th home win in their final home game of the regular season.

Cubs win their 99th game with a 3-1 victory over St. Louis giving them 7 tries to win No. 100 for the first time since 1935. Jon Lester improved to 19-4 pitching his league leading 24th game giving up fewer than 3 runs. He gave up zero in 6.2 innings.

The Cardinals lost a hard-fought 3-1 game to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field Sunday night to slip further back in the wild-card race. They trail the New York Mets by 1 1/2 games and the San Francisco Giants by a half-game with seven games remaining, all at home. Many of the Cardinals key hitters have slumped all month.

Goodnight from Dodger Stadium. See you in October.

The next time I walk in here, Vin Scully won't be calling games. Not sure I've come to grips with that yet.

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Jon Lester made another strong statement for the Cy Young award as he threw 6.2 scoreless innings against the Cardinals giving up just 3 hits and one walk while striking out 7. He lowered his ERA to 2.28 and needs to pitch just 2.1 innings in his final start to reach the coveted 200 innings; a key stat for his own self evaluation.

Mark Saxon ESPN Staff Writer

The Cardinals have had distribution problems all season, which explains why their run differential has been better than their record. In September, it is exacerbated. They have scored 41 of their 88 runs in just four of their 23 games this month, including Saturday's 10-4 win here.

The Cubs final attendance for 2016 is their third highest ever: 3,232,430.

Wow, don't see that often. Joe Maddon goes to the mound to take David Ross out of his last regular-season home game.

The Cardinals are 0 for 4 with men in scoring position off Jon Lester so far dropping his batting average against in that category since the all star break to .078. He's only used 78 pitches to get through 6 innings and meads 2-0.

ROSS HOMER PUTS CUBS IN FRONT

David Ross smacks a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead over the Cardinals.

So far David Ross has two standing ovations and a curtain call as he plays his last reg season game at Wrigley Field. He just homered to put the Cubs up 1-0.

David Schoenfield SweetSpot blogger

David Ross hit .214 in 2013, .184 in 2014, .176 last season. He didn't really deserve to be brought back on anything other than his value as a good clubhouse guy (and serving as Jon Lester's personal catcher). But he's responded with a good year at the plate with a 107 OPS+. Just another thing that's gone perfect for the Cubs this year.
