The Cubs improved to 12-3 against the Pirates this season with a 6-5 win on Wednesday night as they now have a 15 game lead in the division entering September. Their magic number to clinch is just 16.

Worst Dodgers run total in a three-game series at Coors was eight. They were about to crush that. Then the Dodgers scored eight in the final two innings alone to avoid the sweep.

John Farrell has referred lately to the importance of the No. 6 hole in the Red Sox's batting order. With Yoan Moncada coming up and possibly getting regular at-bats against right-handed pitching, you wonder whether he eventually fits in that spot behind Hanley Ramirez and ahead of the left fielder (Brock Holt/Chris Young/eventually Andrew Benintendi), catcher (primarily) Sandy Leon and Jackie Bradley Jr.

Toles' slam caps Dodgers' comeback

Los Angeles scored eight unanswered runs, including Andrew Toles' go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning, for the 10-8 victory over Colorado.

Dodgers 10, Rockies 8, Final, Game 2. Andrew Toles' grand slam capped an improbable five-run ninth inning and the Dodgers avoided a series sweep and a doubleheader sweep to move 1.5 games up on the Giants in the NL West.

After a couple of rough outings Cubs starter Jason Hammel rebounded with a nice effort on Wednesday holding the Pirates to one run over six innings. His biggest moment came in striking out Andrew McCutchen with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to end a threat. Hammel is in a dogfight to start a playoff game though there's plenty of time left before decisions have to be made. Joe Maddon said as much before the game.

ESPN Stats and Information

The Cubs benched Jason Heyward during their series at Colorado (August 19-21) to give him a break. Since then, he has hit .333 with a .851 OPS in 9 games, including 2-of-3 with a walk tonight. He had a .617 OPS through play on August 18, 4th lowest in MLB.

Russell's spectacular grab keeps Cubs ahead

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Addison Russell raced into the outfield for a diving catch to end the inning and keep the Cubs ahead of the Pirates.

Thanks to a three-run homer from old friend Kirk Nieuwenhuis, the Brewers beat the Cardinals 3-1 on Wednesday. That allowed the Mets to move within 1.5 games of the Cardinals for the NL's second wild-card spot. In recent days the Mets have leapfrogged the Marlins and Pirates. So there are no longer any teams between the Mets and the current wild-card-spot occupants.

Mark Saxon ESPN Staff Writer

The Cardinals got shut down by Matt Garza and Milwaukee's suspect bullpen in a 3-1 loss at Miller Park Wednesday night. Rookie pitcher Luke Weaver was masterful, striking out 10 batters, but he had one bad inning, yielding a three-run home run to Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the third inning. The Cardinals lead the New York Mets by 1 1/2 games for the second wild card spot.

Outfielder Justin Ruggiano has been placed on the 60-day disabled list to clear the 40-man roster spot for the acquisition of right-handed reliever Fernando Salas from the Angels. That ends Ruggiano's season.
