Jason Hammel was pulled after just 39 pitches in a 3-1 game against Dodgers on Saturday. We've seen this act before as Joe Maddon did similar last season in the second half several times with Hammel but this year the righty had been throwing well until his last start in Colorado. Hammel did not looked please coming out so early.

Mets rightfielder Jay Bruce went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Friday night, so on Saturday he was out of the starting lineup. Bruce is hitting .160 with two home runs in 81 at-bats since his acquisition from the Reds. "He's gotten off to a slow start," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "He knows it, we know it. It's all about battling through it. I told him to relax a little bit, get something good to hit and put a good swing on it."

Cubs cleanup hitter Ben Zobrist just sac bunted with 2 on, 1 run in and no outs in the first inning against the Dodgers Urias. It was a curious move as the Cubs were off to a good start but Zobrist has done this at least once before -- w 2 strikes no less -- when he claimed he wasn't seeing the ball well. Maybe that was the case again here though it didn't work out as both runners were left stranded after the bunt.

Dodgers rookie Corey Seager now has the most home runs for a shortstop in Dodgers history. He hit his 23rd in the first inning Saturday against the Cubs.

Mets manager Terry Collins said the team had no sense of when Justin Ruggiano would be able to return from his left shoulder injury, so on Saturday they had infielder T.J. Rivera take fly balls in the outfield to prepare for a potential role there. Collins said the Mets don't expect to see a left-handed starter for another week, which would give Rivera some time to prepare. Rivera has played eight career minor league games in the outfield, all in left field.

Vin Scully will call one inning of Sunday's game between the Dodgers and Cubs in both the Los Angeles and Chicago markets. The Chicago broadcast will carry Scully's call for the third inning. Said Cubs manager Joe Maddon: "I think it's an absolute treat for the people of Chicago. I'm sure most of them have heard him before, but if you haven't, it will be an absolute treat."

Infielder T.J. Rivera's stay in Las Vegas was a very, very short one. Rivera was recalled after outfielder Justin Ruggiano was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury that he reaggravated on Friday. Rivera is hitting .314 in 11 games with the Mets. He was demoted on Friday when Neil Walker returned from paternity leave. Ruggiano was hitting .333 with two home runs and seven RBIs in eight games.

From Danny Knobler at Yankee Stadium: For the second straight day at Yankee Stadium and the 29th time this season, an Orioles starting pitcher failed to finish the fifth inning. Dylan Bundy allowed five runs in four innings Saturday, raising the Orioles' rotation ERA for the season to 5.01. No team since the 2001 Cleveland Indians (with rookie CC Sabathia and 28-year-old Bartolo Colon) has made the playoffs with a rotation ERA over 5.00.

Jackie Bradley Jr. has three hits in his last 34 at-bats and is 25-for-90 (.167) in August and 32-for-148 (.216) since the All-Star break. So, for the first time since May 13, he's batting in the No. 9 spot for the Red Sox tonight vs. the Royals. "There's been some pitches up in the strike zone where he's not getting to," manager John Farrell said. "There's been times he's expanded below the strike zone on some offspeed pitches. He's been kind of all-or-nothing."
