Clemens waiting to hear from Yankees

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Five-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens said Thursday he wants to continue playing for the New York Yankees and is waiting to hear from them.

Clemens declined Wednesday to exercise the $10.3 million player option in his contract with the Yankees. He gets the $10.3 million, anyway, in the form of a buyout and becomes eligible for free agency.

"Right now, I'm just waiting to hear from the Yankees,'' Clemens said.

"My first love would be New York right now,'' Clemens said in an interview with Houston television station KRIV.

He said he isn't looking around now at what other teams might be interested.

"That could change in a couple of weeks,'' he said. "I really don't know what to expect. I'm not really concerned about it either way. I'm at peace. I'm going to be working out just as hard.''

Clemens, who is seven wins from 300, said he would like to reach that mark as a Yankee. He was 13-6 with a 4.35 ERA this season.
