Rangers: Former manager has had setbacks

Former Texas Rangers manager Johnny Oates, who was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2001, has been hospitalized near his suburban Richmond, Va., home after suffering setbacks in recent weeks, the team said Tuesday.

The Rangers had no further information on Oates' condition, The Dallas Morning News reported in Wednesday's editions. Oates, who's also managed the Baltimore Orioles, was well enough to watch the Chicago Cubs' home opener Monday on television.

Oates, 58, was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme tumor in the fall of 2001. He underwent surgery and was cancer-free until April 2003, when doctors found at least two tumors in Oates' brain. He was told that the two tumors could not be removed by surgery.
