MIAMI -- Marlins pitcher Josh Beckett was placed on the
15-day disabled list Monday because of a blister on the middle
finger of his throwing hand.
The team recalled reliever Ben Howard from Triple-A Albuquerque
to fill Beckett's roster spot.
Beckett, who was on the disabled list three times in 2002
because of blisters on the same finger, is 4-4 with a 4.06 ERA this
season. He was forced out of Sunday's start against the New York
Mets after only 2 2-3 innings because of the blister.
The Marlins acquired Howard from San Diego for right-hander
Blaine Neal on April 3.
In 17 relief appearances at Albuquerque, Howard was 3-0 with a
3.41 ERA. He allowed 22 hits and 11 earned runs in 29 innings,
striking out 25 and walking 17.
Howard appeared in nine games with the Padres over the 2002 and
2003 seasons, making eight starts. He went 1-4 with a 4.96 ERA in
those games, striking out 34 and walking 29 in 45 1-3 innings.
