Three of four active players with 500 HR in Derby

NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants and Hank Blalock of the Texas Rangers were added to next week's All-Star Home Run Derby, filling out the field of eight competitors.

Bonds, Philadelphia's Jim Thome and the Cubs' Sammy Sosa will represent the National
League on Monday night in Houston.

Ken Griffey Jr. was scratched from the lineup Sunday when he was placed on the disabled list after injuring his hamstring. The Astros' Lance Berkman will replace Griffey in the Derby.

The AL participants are Blalock, Boston's David Ortiz and Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro. New York's Jason Giambi, who has been battling an intestinal parasite, was initially scheduled to compete but withdrew from the lineup Sunday night. No replacement for the Yankees' slugger has yet been named.

Three of the four active players with 500 homers will compete: Bonds
(681), Sosa (555), Palmeiro (540). Griffey, who has 501 homers, would have been the fourth. Thome, who hit
his 400th home run last month, connected for his major
league-leading 28th of the season Thursday night.
