Major leaguers have five games to play

Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez cut short his trip with the major league All-Star team touring Japan to rest a sore hamstring.

"I tried to play to the end," Ramirez told MLB.com. "But I decided it's best for me to return now and rest. I regret not being able to participate till the end of the tour and had a great time here."

Ramirez, teammate David Ortiz and 26 other major-league players have been playing a team of All-Stars from Japan's professional leagues. They have five games to play with their next game Tuesday night.

"We'll miss him," MLB All-Star team manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com. "But we have a good team here. His hamstring had been bothering him. I gave him the day off [on Saturday], but that didn't seem to help. I think the thing for him is to go home and rest it."

Ramirez played designated hitter in Game 1 and left field Sunday night.
