Cliff Floyd knows that his heel will probably never completely heal this season, but he still hopes to be on the field soon.
New York newspapers reported for Monday's editions that the
Mets outfielder took himself out of Saturday's game after only a half-inning when the Achilles that has bothered him most of this season started to act up.
Although he said he hopes to be back on the field for Tuesday's series opener against the Padres at Shea Stadium, tests on Sunday revealed enough irritation that he might have to sit longer.
"Tests show that I have some fluid in there and inflammation and thickening," he told the New York Post.
Floyd may be available to pinch hit, but he said that playing the field was difficult.
"We'll evaluate it on Tuesday," Floyd said. "Hopefully I'll be able to do some things that's going to allow me to go out and play, play the way I know how to play.
"I don't think I'm ready to play."
