Nieve leaves game vs. Braves

ATLANTA -- Add Fernando Nieve to the long list of injured New York Mets.

The Mets starting pitcher left Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves after straining his right quadriceps trying to beat out a grounder in the second inning. Braves right-hander Javier Vazquez caught Nieve's high bouncer with his right hand and threw out Nieve in a close play.

Nieve fell to the ground, grabbing his leg in obvious pain, and was driven off the field. Tim Redding replaced Nieve.

There was no immediate report on the severity of Nieve's injury.

Gary Sheffield did not start for the second straight game because of cramping in his right hamstring that began Friday night.

The Mets are without outfielders Carlos Beltran and Fernando Martinez, first baseman Carlos Delgado, shortstop Jose Reyes, starting pitcher John Maine and relievers J.J. Putz and Billy Wagner due to injuries.
