Mortensen to make second career start

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics have recalled rookie pitcher Clayton Mortensen from the minors to start against the Seattle Mariners.

It is the second career start for Mortensen, who was acquired from St. Louis as part of the Matt Holliday trade on July 24. The right-hander made his major league debut in relief for St. Louis on June 29, then took the loss against Kansas City on Aug. 8 after giving up eight runs in four innings in his first professional start.

The A's went into Friday night having started a rookie pitcher in 96 games this season, an Oakland record and the most in the majors since Florida had 124 in 1998, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Mortensen was 2-2 with a 4.45 ERA for Triple-A Sacramento.
