Hampton to have surgery Tuesday

HOUSTON -- Astros left-hander Mike Hampton has scheduled his left shoulder surgery for Tuesday in New York City.

Hampton was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14 and decided about two weeks later to have the season-ending surgery. Hampton has a significant partial thickness tear of his left rotator cuff.

Dr. David Altchek will perform the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Hampton, who will turn 37 on Wednesday, is 7-10 with a 5.30 ERA this season in 21 starts for the Astros. He left his start Aug. 13 at Florida after five innings with the injury.
