Placido Polanco to have elbow checked

WASHINGTON -- Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco will leave the club and head to Philadelphia to have his left elbow checked by the team's doctor.

Polanco was on the disabled list from June 26 to July 16 with swelling in that elbow.

He sat out Philadelphia's 2-1 loss to the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, one of a handful of regulars who rested a day after the Phillies clinched their fourth consecutive NL East title.

Polanco is expected to rejoin his team this weekend in Atlanta, where the Phillies and Braves will wrap up the regular season with a three-game series Friday to Sunday.
