Report: Jake Westbrook had surgery

Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook had surgery on his left shoulder after the season to repair a small tear, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Wednesday.

Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery within the past 10 days in Birmingham, Ala., the newspaper said.

Westbrook, a right-hander, will become a free agent after the World Series concludes. He went 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 12 starts for the Cardinals since being acquired from the Cleveland Indians on July 31.

The newspaper report said the surgery would not affect Westbrook's offseason preparation.
