A highly touted prospect who dominated in the minors after being drafted in the second round in 2002, the 22-year-old Jon Lester made his major league debut in 2006. He pitched 81 1/3 innings for the Red Sox that season with a 7-2 record and a 4.76 ERA before being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in late August and missing the rest of the season to undergo treatment.
