Matt Holliday (hand) sits out Game 1

The St. Louis Cardinals played Game 1 of their NL Division Series against Philadelphia without All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday.

Holliday has been dealing with discomfort in his right hand. Holliday missed nine games in September with a tendon injury in his right middle finger and left Tuesday's game in Houston in the third inning after the pain resurfaced.

With Holliday out, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa played Lance Berkman in left field while inserting Allen Craig into the lineup in right field.

Injured shortstop Rafael Furcal, however, did make the start Saturday despite an ailing left hamstring.

The Cardinals kept Holliday on the 25-man roster for the series against the Phillies despite the injury. Reliever Kyle McClellan was left off the series roster due to a tired arm.
