Named an All-Star for the third time, second as a Marlin ... Tied a Major League record on April 26 with his 11th home run (hit Osvaldo Fernandez) in the month of April. Missed the majority of the season with a torn ligament in his right thumb ... Suffered the injury on June 9 and was placed on the disabled list until September 1 ... Underwent surgery on June 14 to repair a torn ulnar ligament in his right thumb ... Returned on September 1 after 82 days on the DL ... Set three club marks on September 18 at Philadelphia with seven RBI in a nine-inning game, eight in a row and reaching base in nine consecutive plate appearances ... Traded by the San Diego Padres with Rich Rodriguez to the Florida Marlins for Trevor Hoffman, Andres Berumen and Jose Martinez on June 24, 1993 ... Became the first defending batting champion to be traded since Bill Madlock in 1977 when San Diego dealt him to Florida June 24 ... Became the first player from a first-year expansion team ever to start an All-Star Game ... Homered off California's Mark Langston in his first at-bat in the midseason classic (the second All-Star at-bat of his career and the first in Marlins history) ... Hit safely in his first 12 games as a Marlin ... Put up remarkably similar numbers before and after the trade, hitting .295 (76-258) with 10 homers and 36 RBI in 68 games for San Diego and .292 (69-236) with 10 homers and 37 RBI in 72 games for Florida ... Had two two-homer games, one for San Diego and one for Florida ... Batted .385 (5-13) against his former Padre compatriots.

Made a serious run at becoming the NL's first Triple Crown winner since Joe 'Ducky' Medwick in 1937 ... Led the league in hitting (.330), finished third in home runs (33), and fifth in RBI (100) ... Saw action in only 50 games due to wrist and shoulder ailments ... Finished April with a .275 batting average before injuries took their effect, shuttling him in and out of the lineup ... Went on the DL for the last time July 26, and missed the rest of the season ... Finished with a dismal .194 batting average.

Had a breakthrough year, setting then-career bests with a .294 batting average, 125 games, 487 at-bats, 67 runs, 143 hits, 67 RBI, 30 doubles, 10 homers, 25 steals and 44 walks ... Put together a 16-game hitting streak July 13-29, batting .406 (26-64) during the stretch ... Also had a 12-game hitting streak in June ... Had his first career four-hit game July 1 at Seattle.

1989
Named to the Topps Rookie All-Star Team as a shortstop despite being limited by a broken bone in his foot for much of the second half of the season.

1988
Combined to hit .314 with 32 homers and 131 RBI with El Paso (AA), Denver (AAA) and Milwaukee ... Homered off Mark Langston of Seattle Sept. 9 for his first major league hit.
