Yu Darvish has at least one five-year offer on the table, according to a source, but he has yet to receive an offer enticing enough to take the plunge. The Cubs, Twins, Rangers, Dodgers and Brewers all continue to monitor Darvish's market. Most baseball observers think he'll be the first upper-level free agent starter to sign, with Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn and Alex Cobb next in line. With pitchers and catchers set to report to spring camps in three weeks, time is growing short for everyone.

Re-signing utilityman Howie Kendrick (for two years and $7 million) is the latest reflection that new Nationals skipper Dave Martinez is going to wind up managing almost entirely the same team Dusty Baker had a shot with last year. The biggest change will be a full season with a healed up Adam Eaton, while the most notable camp competition might be for the last slot in the rotation, with NRIs Edwin Jackson and Tommy Milone and prospect Erick Fedde in the mix.

Teams that have spoken with the Pirates have gotten the sense that GM Neal Huntington will be more receptive to trade offers for Andrew McCutchen now that Gerrit Cole has departed for Houston via trade. The Giants are among several clubs that have maintained a dialogue with Pittsburgh on McCutchen, who is a free agent at the end of the 2018 season.

Getting Gerrit Cole from the Pirates is great news for the Astros at almost any price (with Joe Musgrove and Colin Moran the named pieces so far). If they can work with him to get similar results as they did with Justin Verlander, weep for the rest of the AL West for the next two years. Scratch one landing spot for Yu Darvish, and watch to see how soon Andrew McCutchen gets dealt from Pittsburgh as well.

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts says Sammy Sosa needs to "put everything on the table" in reference to steroid use during his playing days before he can be welcomed back to the team. Also said he's sympathetic to players of that era but the truth is needed before the page can be turned.

Theo Epstein admits the Cubs are still looking to add to their team. They've been linked to Arrieta, Darvish and Cobb this offseason: "We're not done, " Epstein said. "We certainly would like to add another pitcher. I like our talent but we can add to the depth. You can do that through depth moves or you can do it through adding another real quality pitcher and bolster the depth more that way."

Jesse Rogers ESPN Staff Writer

Theo Epstein, on the slow moving free agent market which he ties to the slow moving trade market as well: "Teams are trying to position themselves the best way they can, probably with one eye on next year's free agent market and trying to get their payroll where they want it to be. It's probably a combination of factors but I don't know we've seen anything quite like this."

Kyle Hendricks called his $4 million+ contract for 2018 as "life changing." He said he plays the game for fun but it's good to see the hard work pay off.
