OF Mark Zagunis will make his ML debut on Thursday as he'll bat ninth for the Cubs who are missing Jason Heyward (hand), Ben Zobrist (wrist) and Kyle Schwarber (minors). The 2014, 3rd round pick will play RF while Ian Happ is in left. Once again, Anthony Rizzo will bat lead off as the Cubs open a series in Miami against the Marlins. Zagunis had a .399 OBP at Triple-A.

Béisbol Esta Noche en vivo este viernes con el retiro del 34 de Big Papi para América Latina. 6 pm

ESPN Stats and Information

The Dodgers have scored eight or more runs in five consecutive games, their longest such streak since 1945. Only once in franchise history have they had a longer streak: six games in June 1894, when they were known as the Brooklyn Grooms.

Red Sox are retiring David Ortiz's No. 34 eight months after his last game. Even Derek Jeter had to wait two full seasons to see the Yankees retire his No. 2. John Farrell took note yesterday of the Sox's expedience with Big Papi. "The fact that his is being done so soon after retiring, I think speaks volumes -- what he's meant to the city, what he's meant to the organization."

Interesting decision by the A's to designate Stephen Vogt for assignment. He wasn't having a good season, hitting .217/.287/.357, but was an All-Star the past two seasons. They now have 10 days to trade him and given his minimal salary ($2.9 million), I could see some trading for him as a backup catcher.

The Cubs have sent .171 hitter Kyle Schwarber to Triple-A Iowa, according to sources familiar with the situation. After months of struggles Schwarber will get a chance to find his game before returning to help the team down the stretch. The Cubs also placed Jason Heyward on the DL with a hand injury. Replacing those players will be pitcher Dylan Floro and OF Mark Zagunis. Zagunis was a 3rd round pick in 2014 and will make his ML debut when he enters a game.

Well, baseball survived Yasiel Puig's 32.1-second home run trot as the Dodgers beat the Mets 8-2. The Dodgers have clocked 12 home runs in the first three games of the series, already tied for third-most homers the Mets have allowed in a series in franchise history. It's up to Steven Matz stop the bleeding on Thursday.

Jarrod Dyson breaks up Justin Verlander's perfect game with a one-out bunt single in the sixth, perfectly placed past Verlander and too far for Miguel Cabrera to make a play. And, no, Dyson didn't break any sacred rules. You're trying to win a game here.

We're seeing vintage Justin Verlander tonight at Safeco Field. He's perfect through five innings with nine strikeouts, hitting 97 mph and blowing his fastball past the Mariners on several occasions. He's at 76 pitches, so he'll run up a high pitch count if he keeps this going.

Yasiel Puig breaks open the game with a towering, three-run moon shot of a home run to left-center, standing at home plate to admire his work. In related news: the Mets are playing a bad game of baseball.

The Mets load the bases with nobody out against Rich Hill in the fourth inning on a walk, single and error, but Hill responds with strikeouts of Jose Reyes, Gavin Cecchini and pitcher Tyler Pill to escape the jam. Game tied 1-1.

The Dodgers re-signed Rich Hill, hoping he could be their No. 2 starter behind Clayton Kershaw, but he's had blister problems and has lost the feel and command of his curveball. He's been a little better tonight, allowing a Curtis Granderson home run through three innings, but at least hasn't walked anyone and has twice fanned Yoenis Cespedes.

Roger Clemens was at the current Yankee Stadium for the first time since it opened in 2009. A team spokesman said Clemens was making an appearance on the suite level. He met with GM Brian Cashman. Clemens walked through the clubhouse, but reporters were talking to current players. The Yankees and Clemens have kept their distance since he was named in the 2007 Mitchell Report.
