The Cubs beat the White Sox 6-3 behind a big night from Kyle Schwarber. He homered twice and earned his second career triple while driving in four runs. He has 17 home runs despite a .191 batting average. He's also hitting .280 since his return from the minor leagues. Anthony Rizzo also homered while Jon Lester gave up 2 runs over 7 innings. The Cubs took 3 of 4 from the Sox and head to second place Milwaukee with a 1.5 game lead.

The ghosts of Yankee Stadium just got the Rays. Tampa's Alex Colome was about to pitch out of a ninth inning jam for the save when shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria and second baseman Tim Beckham, shifting, got confused on who should take a grounder. Instead of the final out, the ball bounced into the outfield for an RBI single to tie the game at five and send it to extra innings. Brett Gardner scored the run after a leadoff triple. He had been left at third by Clint Frazier (groundout) and Aaron Judge (flyout) before Sanchez "came through."

Gary Sanchez grounds between shifted infielders, who appeared confused about who would pursue the ball; tie score, 5-5.

Colome gets Judge on a shallow fly to right field. Gardner still at third, with two outs in the ninth. Rays lead 5-4.

Kyle Schwarber has two home runs, the latest a 423 ft blast out to right. Earlier, he hit one to left center as he's notched his fourth career multi home run game. He also has a triple tonight, to go along with 17 home runs this season.

J.D. Martinez is the 6th player with 20+ HR in each of the last 4 seasons (Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, Edwin Encarnación, Khris Davis, Nelson Cruz). He has now hit grand slams for both AL (Tigers) and NL (Diamondbacks) teams this season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was thrown out in the seventh for arguing balls and strikes. He did a poor man's Billy Martin impersonation, drawing a little line in the dirt near the plate. It was his third ejection of the year.

Yankees manager Joe Girard's quick trigger totally backfired on him in the fifth inning. Girardi took out starter CC Sabathia with one out, even though Sabathia had only allowed two runs. With right-handed hitter up in DH Trevor Plouffe, Girardi lifted Sabathia for righty Chad Green. Sabathia looked mad about the decision as he left the field after 86 pitches. It didn't work out for Girardi as Rays manager Kevin Cash countered and pinch-hit lefty Brad Miller. Miller promptly doubled to give the Rays the lead.

ESPN Stats and Information

With his third strikeout on Thursday, CC Sabathia passed Cy Young for 20th all-time in strikeouts. Sabathia now has 2,800 career strikeouts.

CC Sabathia struck out his 2,800th batter of his career to surpass Cy Young on the all-time list at No. 20.

ESPN Stats and Information

After his 2nd-inning double, Jacoby Ellsbury is now 21-41 (.512) in his career vs Chris Archer, the best average by any active major-leaguer with at least 40 at-bats against an active big-league pitcher, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Next on the list: Dustin Pedroia vs Scott Kazmir (.489), Matt Carpenter vs Wily Peralta (.478) and Matt Kemp vs Jorge De La Rosa (.471).

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

The Braves' demotion of Dansby Swanson to the minors may seem a bit odd at this point in the season, but of 167 qualified regulars, he ranks 163rd in wRC+. His 23 percent strikeout rate is too high without the power numbers to compensate. Most problematic: He's hitting just .217 against fastballs and .186 against 93-plus. Seems like he simply can't catch up to good velocity.
