Close friends A. J. Ellis and Clayton Kershaw shed a tear together after Ellis was traded Thursday from the Dodgers to the Phillies. Said Ellis: "To know that, in almost all likelihood, I will never get to catch (Kershaw) again is definitely the most devastating thing I'm feeling right now."

Former Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis, on his trade Thursday to the Phillies: It's a really, really sad day for me and a really sad day for my family. One of the things I was most proud of was being a Dodger for my entire career."

zep-CHIN-ski. That's how you pronounce the last name of reliever Marc Rzepczynski, whom the Nats acquired from the A's today in exchange for minor league infielder Max Schrock. The 30-year old southpaw joins a Washington pen whose 3.28 ERA leads the NL, but lacks lefty options with vet Oliver Perez struggling and rookie Sammy Solis sidelined (shoulder). In 56 games with Oakland, zep-CHIN-ski posted a 3.00 ERA, but his 14.2% walk rate was the highest among AL relievers (min. 30 IP).

Fascinating trade involving the Phillies and Dodgers. Carlos Ruiz goes to the Dodgers for C AJ Ellis, RHP Tommy Bergjans and a player to be named later. Wonder if Ruiz becomes Clayton Kershaw's personal catcher when Kershaw returns

If you've never seen Glenn Donnellan play his Electric Slugger - an amped violin that he custom-crafted out of a bat - you're missing out. If you've never seen Nats pitching coach Mike Maddux play the Electric Slugger...well, you're probably OK. Here's Maddux fiddling around after Donnellan's national anthem soundcheck at Nats Park.

Terry Collins believes there's merit giving Jacob deGrom extra rest before his next start. "To me it looks like he's getting run down," Collins said about deGrom, who has allowed a combined 13 runs and 25 hits in 9 2/3 innings over his last two starts. Collins said he will have to convene in New York with Sandy Alderson before making any decision.

Jay Bruce has some tightness with his right calf while pushing off, but suggested he has made progress since departing Wednesday's game. He aims to return to the lineup Friday.
