In the wake of what happened last night at Yankee Stadium, what say you? Sport-wide consistency, or as it is now, up to each team?

The frightful Yankee Stadium episode Wed. in which a little girl was injured by a foul ball calls to mind the ongoing concerns of Mandy Coolbaugh, whose husband Mike -- a minor league first-base coach -- was killed 7/22/07 on a liner that struck him in the neck. She says when she and their two toddler sons attended Mike's games, he insisted that they stay in an area with protective netting and that she advocates extending netting at ballparks.

The Indians held on for a 6-5 win over the Angels and now they're back on a four-game winning streak. I'll do the math for you: That's 26-1 over their past 27 games. They haven't lost a road game since August 20. Francisco Lindor is on a tear, slamming his 31st home run. Jason Kipnis is trying out center field and had two hits. Jose Ramirez hit his MLB-leading 51st double. Now, about the Browns ...

Hunter Renfroe, just back from a month-long minor league demotion (where he hit .509 in 14 games!), became the first Padres player to hit three home runs in a game since Phil Nevin in 2001. That was the longest drought for any team without a three-homer game. In fact, since Nevin's game on October 6 of 2001, there had been 162 three-homer games -- 12 of those came AGAINST the Padres, the most of any team.

The Dodgers had a chance to clinch the NL West on Wednesday, but instead suffered a third straight loss to the lowly Phillies, who will go for the series sweep on Thursday. The Dodgers are 5-20 over their past 25 games and their magic number remains at two. The Red Sox did clinch at least a wild-card spot with their win and the Angels' loss. Other magic numbers: Red Sox: 8 (to win AL East) Cubs: 8 (to win NL Central) Yankees: 3 (to clinch wild card) Diamondbacks: 4 (to clinch wild card)

Chris Sale became the second-pitcher in Red Sox history with 300 K in a season, joining Pedro Martínez who did it in his Cy Young winning 1999 season.

Tough loss for the Brewers. With a chance to tie the Rockies for the second wild card and gain a game on the Cubs, Aaron Wilkerson made his first career start and didn't last long, but the Brewers still took a 4-3 lead in the seventh. Corey Knebel's throwing error on a little dribbler allowed a run to score in the eighth, however, and then Adam Frazier clocked his first career walk-off home run, a two-run shot off Knebel. The Pirates snap a seven-game skid, but that L1 is going to sting for the Brewers.
