Safeties have to be able to over-lap on that throw, regardless of whether or not MLB is carrying vertical down the middle. Especially Ginn.

Initial asking price on Encarnacion in range of $125m over five years... but the sheer volume in 1B-DH-Of market working against him

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

The Mets this offseason asked the Orioles for a high-end reliever in a trade for an outfielder (Curtis Granderson or Jay Bruce). That wasn't going to fly.

I'd bet these #'s drew NYY interest in Matt Holliday:His BABIP drop of 82 points in 2016 suggests he was unlucky. Line drive rate increased.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer

Like Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday now off the board for Red Sox, who have talked to Mike Napoli, according to source. Pedro Alvarez could represent left-handed option. Or Red Sox could bank on Hanley Ramirez-like revival from Pablo Sandoval and full season of Andrew Benintendi.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Given the Yankees' current state, it always seemed hard to fathom they would be the winners in the Edwin Encarnacion sweepstakes. With Carlos Beltran headed to Houston, Matt Holliday on a one-year deal makes sense. Holliday will DH and provide outfield depth.

John Schuerholz was elected to the Hall unanimously. Bud Selig got 15 of 16 possible votes. Lou Piniella was next with 7.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Davey Johnson was passed over for Hall of Fame selection. He received fewer than five votes among the 16 voters and needed 75 percent. John Schuerholtz (16 votes) and Bud Selig (15) were selected.

ESPN Stats and Information

Former Royals and Braves GM John Schuerholz was one of two people elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Bud Selig. Schuerholz won the World Series with the 1985 Royals and 1995 Braves. From 1991 to 2007 (his time as Braves GM), the Braves had an MLB-best .593 win pct and MLB-low 3.63 team ERA.

Hall of Fame announces that Bud Selig and John Schuerholz have been elected to the Hall by the Today's Game Era committee. Both incredibly deserving.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Sandy Alderson said Zack Wheeler may be a bullpen option if all of the starting pitchers are healthy, presumably with Robert Gsellman in the rotation. Having five starting pitchers coming off surgery all healthy to start the season is a big if, though.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Sandy Alderson explicitly stated he is not looking for closer types. Addison Reed would slide into the closer role assuming Jeurys Familia is suspended. The Mets are looking for middle relievers on one-year deals.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Sandy Alderson addresses the Mets' plans after arriving at the winter meetings. He intends to trade an outfielder and add bullpen help -- although not closer types.

The Mets are fully planning to go with Travis d'Arnaud as the primary catcher in 2017 and don't foresee going the external route. That's the case even with a new crop of free agents such as Welington Castillo, who was non-tendered by the Diamondbacks.

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

The Mets are confident they will be able to trade an outfielder before the winter meetings conclude since they do not have much else to work on this week. Their preference is to trade Jay Bruce over Curtis Granderson, but Granderson has been drawing more interest. Ideally, the Mets would return a reliever in the trade, but prospects may be the return instead.

Market for relievers won't really start moving until Chapman, Jansen, Melancon start to move, but 13 teams have checked in on Brad Ziegler

Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN

As mentioned in the column early last week, the Braves will not include Dansby Swanson in any trade, including for Chris Sale.
