The Astros remain interested on several top pitching targets -- starting and relief -- but competing executives say Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow has been resistant to engaging in discussions on any of the team's top prospects. If Luhnow sticks with that approach and decides not to bend, it's going to be difficult to add an impact piece by Monday's deadline.

David Price is now headed to the 10-day disabled list after receiving an MRI on his throwing elbow Thursday. Since 2010, Price ranks in the top 5 among pitchers in pitches thrown, innings pitched, and batters faced.

The San Francisco Giants are in a box as the trade deadline approaches. They're shopping center fielder Denard Span. But he has a career-low five stolen bases and a minus-18 Defensive Runs Saved, and he's generating minimal interest. Hunter Strickland is another potential Giants trade chip, but the deadline relief glut has suppressed his value. The Giants could decide to keep Strickland as part of their relief corps with Will Smith, Sam Dyson and closer Mark Melancon in 2018.

Red Sox are calling David Price's injury "left elbow inflammation." The DL move is retroactive to Tuesday, so earliest Price could pitch would be next Friday (Aug. 4) vs. White Sox.

Rick Porcello will start tonight for Red Sox. Lefty reliever Robby Scott recalled from Triple-A to fill David Price's spot on the roster.

Red Sox weren't in market for a starting pitcher, but worth wondering if David Price's injury will change that. Still time before Monday's trade deadline, but diminished farm system doesn't leave Boston well-positioned to jump into derby for Sonny Gray or other top available starters.

David Price will, in fact, be placed on the disabled list, a major-league source has confirmed.

Because of discomfort similar to what he experienced in spring training, David Price had an MRI on his elbow Thursday and is likely to be scratched from his scheduled start tonight. For the immediate future, a big loss for Boston, if he's out for an extended period; he has a 3.31 ERA in his last eight starts. Big picture, A huge concern for the Red Sox, because if this is a significant elbow issue, Price is very early in that record-setting $217 million deal, when Boston is most likely to recoup performance return.

With Gregory Polanco out, Jay Bruce would make sense as a target for the Pirates. As of Thursday night, Mets have nothing in works on Bruce.
