Red Sox manager John Farrell believes slimmer Pablo Sandoval will be better defensive 3B. "With the body composition he's got, we'd expect to see increase in range, maybe some better foot quickness, better body control."

Dexter Fowler has brought a new feel, but mostly a new sound, to Cardinals camp. Here is one random slice of life around the team. Though the Cardinals take batting practice with music during the baseball season, it is new for spring training.

Despite positive early bullpens, the Dodgers will take it slow with starter Hyun-Jin Ryu. The Cactus League schedule starts Saturday, and as of now, Ryu is not scheduled to pitch in a game. "It is kind of contingent on his progress," manager Dave Roberts said.

LHP Brian Johnson, who missed time in 2015 with elbow discomfort and two months last year while seeking treatment for anxiety, will start Thursday for Red Sox vs. Northeastern. Fellow lefties Henry Owens and Roenis Elias will start Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is on board with some, not all, rules changes for baseball. On the new rule for an automatic intentional walk, Roberts says, "If that's the rule, we'll kind of abide." As for a proposal to put a runner on base in extra innings … not so fast. "That doesn't sound too appealing for me .. "

An interesting idea to speed up the game from Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Borrowing from the NFL, Girardi said he would have small listening devices for batters to receive signs. For pitchers and catchers, they could use them to change signals.

Interesting perspective from Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka on implementing a dugout signal for intentional walks: "Perhaps it will take away some of the drama out of baseball. But, if you are just talking from the standpoint of a pitcher, it's an advantage because there is no chance of the ball being overthrown over the catcher's head or anything like that. Also, last year, Gary Sánchez almost hit a home run off an intentional walk, so it avoids that situation too. But also, intentional walks are something that can throw a pitcher off rhythm a little bit. When you are pitching out, the balls that you are throwing are light tosses. And then all of a sudden you have to go back into the game and throw 100 percent to the next batter. So perhaps not having to do that will keep you in rhythm."

Can Corey Seager get even better in 2017? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that Seager never felt like he had his "A swing" during his rookie-of-the-year season in 2016. Room for improvement seems to exist.

An anecdotal glimpse into how a good team maintains a winning culture: Young reliever Matt Bowman is working on his changeup this spring. He threw several during a live batting practice session to Dexter Fowler. Afterward, Fowler yelled "Stay hot, Bowman!" and the two chatted near the batting cage. Bowman asked Fowler what he saw from his changeup and the veteran outfielder said, "I saw that it was nasty." They continued to discuss the pitch. Such interplay between hitters and pitchers doesn't happen on some teams.
