Aaron Boone on his initial impressions of young infielders Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar: "I'm trying to contain my excitement. I think they're both going to be tremendous players. I love who they are. You can tell they enjoy being on the baseball field. You can tell they're confident in their ability, the way they move around, yet there's a humility about them."

Red Sox announce they have traded outfielder Bryce Brentz to the Pirates for cash considerations. Brentz, 29, hit 31 homers last season in Triple-A and was a candidate for a bench spot. But once the Red Sox agreed to terms with J.D. Martinez, Brentz was no longer a fit. Trading Brentz also opens a spot on the 40-man roster, which presumably will be occupied by Martinez once he passes his physical and the deal becomes official.

On a back field at the Yankees' spring training complex, fans can get a close-up view of Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez taking BP. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

Here's my best estimate of the Red Sox's payroll, with salaries calculated for luxury tax purposes. After the J.D. Martinez signing becomes official, it looks like the payroll will be approximately $232 million.

Hanley Ramirez on how forthcoming addition of J.D. Martinez might affect his playing time: "At-bats are not on my mind. You know what is on my mind? Winning. That's it." Ramirez, who moves from being the primary DH into a possible 1B timeshare with Mitch Moreland, needs 497 plate appearances to vest his $22 million option for next year.

With the deal still pending results of a physical, Red Sox manager Alex Cora declined to talk about J.D. Martinez. But reviews in the clubhouse were predictably positive. "He's a force," first baseman Mitch Moreland said. Center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. called Martinez a "difference maker."

Here's what JD Martínez told me about how his father has inspired him: "My dad, when he came over from Cuba, he had three kids at the time. He was working over 100 hours a week at Domino's Pizza, flipping pizzas, just to put food on the plate every night for us. He had that hunger, that desire, to make something of himself and that's what he always taught me."
