Michael Pineda settled down after his bad first inning, throwing five hitless innings before surrendering hits to the first two batters he faced in the seventh. Both wound up scoring when reliever Blake Parker gave up a 3-run HR to Alcides Escobar. Pineda's final line-- 6+ IP, 7H, 5ER -- raised his ERA to 5.12 and put him in a position to drop to 6-11 for the season.

Tigers top White Sox 4-3, heading into a stretch of critical games this month against divisional opponents. That Cam Maybin injury may loom large, however, if he is forced to miss time. Key cog to their offense. Even when playing through injury, provides the lineup with a dynamic, energetic presence.

Betts blasts 30th homer of season

Mookie Betts crushes his 30th home run of the season in the Red Sox's 9-4 win over the Rays.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eight, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia blasts a two-run shot to right centerfielder to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Had just one home run in the last 20 games heading into Monday's contest against the Chicago White Sox.

Red Sox win their kind of game, taking an early lead and playing comfortably from ahead thanks to good enough starting pitching. In this case, Rick Porcello gives up three runs in seven innings and notches his 18th win in a 9-4 victory over the Rays. Boston remains two games off Toronto's pace in the AL East.

Donaldson sends homer into bleachers

One night after the first three-homer game of his career, the Blue Jays' Josh Donaldson hits another home run, his 34th of the season.

Despite seven strong from Wade Miley (5 H, 3 ER, 9 K), the Orioles fell 5-1 to the Blue Jays in the opener of a crucial three-game set between division rivals. The loss drops the O's to four games back in the AL East, their largest deficit of the season.

Asdrubal Cabrera's left knee was not feeling well enough to start, but he did pinch hit on Monday. Cabrera struck out in the seventh against Marlins reliever Kyle Barraclough. Cabrera, the reigning NL Player of the Week, had departed Sunday's game in the first inning with knee discomfort. He recently spent three weeks on the DL with a strained patellar tendon in that knee.

Considering the pain Cameron Maybin was already playing through, a distressing sign for the Tigers to see the CF exit the game with what appeared to be an aggravation of his left thumb injury. Attempted to steal second, got up while grimacing over left hand. Maybin has been an offensive catalyst for Tigers, but has also battled injuries throughout season. DET has to be hoping this one won't be a significant one.

St. Louis Cardinals starter Carlos Martínez has struck out a career-high 13 against the Brewers. All 18 of his outs through 6 innings came via either strikeout or ground ball, Martínez is the 3rd pitcher to strike out at least 11 hitters against the same team twice this season. The others are Jake Arrieta (Pirates) and Jon Gray (Padres)

How much better a pitcher would Michael Pjneda be if all games started in the second inning? About a half-run better. Pineda, who allowed three first inning runs to the Kansas City Royals Monday night, has now allowed 22 earned runs in 26 first innings for a 6.84 ERA. Take that away and Pineda's overall ERA drops from 5.14 to 4.43. Start the game in the third inning and Pineda gets even better. Without the 17 runs he's allowed in 26 second innings (5.88) and Pineda's ERA plummets to a respectable 4.01.

Dodgers are undecided if they are going to bring up Yasiel Puig on Sept 1 or later in Sept so he can get more consistent at-bats at AAA for his development. However, their tentative plan is for him to be back with Dodgers this year. It is also unlikely that Puig clears waivers and even more unlikely he's traded, at least until the off-season. According to a league source the Dodgers put close to 20 players on waivers this past weekend like almost every other club does this time of year.

Rafael Montero tossed five scoreless innings in his first major league start since April 28, 2015. Of course, in addition to allowing two hits against the Marlins, Montero also walked six batters on Monday. With his pitch count soaring, Montero faced a jam in the fifth, with runners on first and second and one out. But on pitch No. 100, Montero completed his outing by coaxing a double-play grounder from Marcell Ozuna. The six walks issued by Montero were the most by a Mets pitcher since Zack Wheeler also walked six on May 13, 2014 against the Yankees. It was the most walks in a scoreless start since Jeurys Familia, now the closer, issued six walks in four innings against the Marlins on Oct. 1, 2012.

The Mets had a short bench on Monday, with infielder T.J. Rivera demoted to make room for spot starter Rafael Montero and with Neil Walker (back) and Asdrubal Cabrera (knee) nursing injuries. In fact, only Jay Bruce and backup catcher Rene Rivera were available to pinch hit. So whom did Terry Collins call upon to pinch hit in the fifth inning for Montero in a scoreless game? Jacob deGrom, whose start had been skipped because of suspected fatigue. DeGrom grounded out to first base against Jose Fernandez.

Rangers DH Carlos Beltrán hit his 25th home run on Monday, giving him 25 in a season for the first time since 2012. Beltrán has 417 career home runs. He's the sixth switch-hitter to have eight 25-homer seasons. Eddie Murray has the most, 12.

The Cardinals may have tapped into a hidden power source when they acquired Jedd Gyorko for Jon Jay last December. Gyorko's career high for home runs, 23, came in his rookie season. He had 525 plate appearances that year. Gyorko hit his 23rd of the season off Zach Davies Monday night and this time it took him just 327 plate appearances.
